Last night, we had Duckmandu from Oakland, CA. He plays Dead Kennedys covers on the accordion!

We had Ryan Lossing of A Plague Called Man perform with his comic duo, Male Pattern Radness, with Brandon Hugiens.

Robin Vining treated us with some songs.

Gina Loes, who hosts the open mic on Friday nights at the Promenade, sang with her sister. She's my all-time favorite female singer, just a beautiful voice. (Jocelyn, Yolanda, and Lonna are still high up on the list! :D )

The usual goodness with people like Kurtis Curfew, Dave Gironda, Peter Alexander... if people here on the board don't know their names, that's too bad, because they are certainly talented.

The big announcement was that Dave, who hosts open mic, is leaving in August to attend the NAU music program in music school.

I will be taking over as host. :)

Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright.
It's a shopping center, I think there's a coffee shop there? I haven't been yet.

had to skip this one 'cause of the dual problem that 1) I've caught some odd summer cold, and my voice is shambles, and 2) had to leave for work 5am... it's now wednesday night, and I tried to sing for the first time in days, and it was an ugly, ugly effort. I may not yet be back on the horse for next monday, and after that I leave for holbrook through august, SO, I might be done w/ open mic for a while. see you when I get back~

one thought brodie, for when you take over the open mic: one of dave's signup list behaviors drives me crazy. if I had my way, I'd wait till 9pm to allow people to add their name to the list a 2nd time. last couple times I went, I showed up 10 mins before the start at 8pm, had to wait thru 8-9 people first time and the half those folks had signed up a 2nd time... I'm all for repeats IF time permits, but it's excessive when the list is too long & the open mic is too popular already. c'mon, if you just gotta do more than three songs, go find a real gig somewhere. ok, I think I've made my point. for the most part I think dave runs a great operation, and you'll need to stay the course brodie... just had to share my $.02 worth

see you there when I'm able.

In Sf they have this system at the Utah where you show up at 7:30 and put your name on a piece of paper and then they draw names and assign you a slot....then if your slot is to late for you you can ask someone that scored an earlier slot if they can trade....

I will broach this subject with the current host, and definitely find ways to make the open mic an even more enjoyable experience when I take over.

So... I better see more of y'all there...

similar system at the fiddler's dream here in town, the best formula I've seen for a "too-popular" open mic: signup between 7-8pm, (14 names allowed, 8 minutes each performer = 2 hours), show starts at 8, the names go into a hat, the host calls out the name of whoever's up, and whoever's on deck. you only know one performer ahead of when you're up. so some weeks you go early, others late, but you'll always be watching 2hrs worth of music. the other thing about fiddler's dream is that there's no PA... just you and a guitar and a roomfull of people. audience really listens, everyone's attentive & even critical. probably wouldn't work for many coffeeshop type places frequented by various misfits and scenesters, but it's perfect for a crowd thats got its business together a little better. anyway, I might stop by willow house for a bit tonight, but no performing I'm afraid. salud oh yeah, tom tuerff, who's listed on one of the trunkspace bills is the guy who does the fiddler's dream (used to anyway, I haven't been in well over a year)
