-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

You're surprised that some dumb indie rock band would sell out to do a commercial for one of the biggest corporations in the world?
not surprised that they would sell the rights, but to actually sing the big mac song. eh your right cash rules every thing around me

What makes it a sell-out?
Maybe their "dream" was to make music AND make money.
Maybe they're not so dumb.
maybe they're not so "Indie".

When asked if he signed the deal because Sprite was his favorite drink, he replied, "Eh - I drink it, but it's not like I'm crazy about the stuff."
I think it can be cheesy when some songs get used in commercials and whatnot, but I'm not sure what's considered selling out any more.
Dudes who are ready to sell off as many songs as possible to mega-corporations at the drop of the hat - that's kind of weird, but once you're in the realm of trying to sell your music, whether just mp3s, CD-Rs, or full, fancy albums, the line between commerce and art (and trying to make a living in between them) gets kind of blurred anyway.

but I'd like to pay my rent ..." - AJJ
I don't know ... It strikes me that most people would love to earn a living based on doing something that they love or on something related to something they love. It's pretty admirable that some folks (artists) have guidelines and ethics of things they will and won't do (and its conversely pretty cruddy when it seems that some folks are willing to do anything to get money in their grubby little paws), but I think people have to (and probably do) set their own guidelines, rather than to live up to some prefabricated notion of not selling out.
It's a thin, blurry line ... probably less of a line than a stream of milk poured into coffee - at some point, there's no separating the two.
I don't know ... who cares?
I hope that everyone who sells out remembers to buy ice cream for the kids in their neighborhood every once in a while.

Who cares? In the big picture, I think the whole "ethics" of music is bullshit. Make money and go crazy. If a band no longer plays songs you like, fuck it.
