Depending on what kind of music you are into:

Record Stores: Zia's is good for all types of music. Try Stinkweeds if you are into hip indie rock stuff, Metal Devastation if you are into metal, or Eastside if you are into punk.

Venues: Modified Arts has a bit of everything but skews heavily towards hip indie rock. Trunk Space has a lot of arty performance-based stuff. The Sets, The Clubhouse, and the Marquee Theater is where most of the big touring acts play. The Ruby Room is a bar that also has neat bands and stuff at times.

as far as record stores go, you will never need anything other than stinkweed's and revolver records.

Oh yeah, and if you are looking for something to do, it never hurts to grab a copy of the Phoenix New Times. Towards the back, most of the clubs in town have an ad that lists their weekly shows. You can get a pretty good idea of the musical style and type of venue from looking at the ads, and on top of that they have short articles about several interesting things happening on each day of the week.

Also check out silverplatter.info which lists fun things going on at a variety of venues.

what's the other cross street? n 30th st runs a long way north-south.

also, keep checking here, you'll get a great feel of things
just by keeping an eye on the shows and general forum.

we're practically neighbors. actually, i think there's a lot of people on this board who live pretty close to there.

most of the places weener mentioned are closer to the downtown area - but it's only a 10 minute drive. i can't think of anything that's walking distance.

also, check out the band links on the front page. most of them play out pretty regularly and you'll find a lot of other venues besides the ones listed in the posts.

Emperors of Japan
Myspace

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

2 good house venues:

The Tribe--Phoenix
Bike Saviors--Tempe

Also, Trax in Wax on Central is a great slice of oldschool PHX.
Great general vinyl selection, 7" and full lengths.

There is also Rock A Way records in Mesa/Tempe, but the location keeps moving.

Now, tell us about YOU!?

That's awesome that you are gong to Roberto Venn. If I had all kinds of money, I'd go there just for fun. There's a gal who posts on here sometimes who graduated from there. I hope you like Phoenix, it's a great place if you know what to look for.

i know a guy who will be going with you to venn, then. i won't
tell you who, but you should stand up in the middle of
making a guitar and say 'WHO FUCKING KNOWS AARON
BURKE?' and my friend will look at you all weird
