I've asked many Smiths fans and no one has been able to tell me why they're so awesome. It's not that I dislike the Smiths it's just that I've never seen why they're so awesome.

That would mostly be because of the emotional symbolism in the lyrics "Trudging slowly over wet sand.." you know what you would be sort of feeling if you were trudging slowly over wet sand, instead of stupid blunt "I'm lonely and dissillusioned on the beach", then, you have groundbreaking guitar playing by Jonny Mar that went to an atmosphere instead of athletic skill, instead of how many notes can I cram into a half a second, jonny was like, "how do I make this chord warble as it flows in a circle around the listeners head." Then you need to consider what a huge influence The Smiths were on other moody introspective bands like The Cure, who just exaggerated the stylish Brit gothic androgeny into theatrics. The Smiths are the reason Depeche Mode became anything, Duran Duran Adam Ant and more bubblegum pop was trying to occupy Smith's space but had too much extra cheese. Elvis Costello might be a victim of people not getting it, but that's only because getting it really requires about five to ten serious listenings, so the short answer, no one else did what they did *before* they did it, and Morrisey turned the girls on with style, handing them lillies at each live, show, and where there will be a thousand girls, there will be 1500 guys, and that built on itself in it's time. I suppose you might also wonder what's so cool about Dinosaur Jr. or The Pixies?

I think there used to be a big Arizona Morrissey fan contingent, but I think most of them have moved to different parts of the country.

You know who loves Morrissey? Los Angeles. Diverse crowd, though mostly young and Latino.
