I am looking for a place to go after work and just kick it, and have a beer or something and relax, but most places I know of play country music or something.
Thanks.

Can someone recommend a bar\pub etc in the Valley that plays 70s\80's\90's punk, rock, grunge and alt music, that one can go to?

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

i'll second dave's mention of the ice house. very cool (pun intended).
casey moore's is usually pretty good, but i haven't been in tempe in a long time.
central phx = bikini lounge.

I'm big on Funugyz (83rd & Thunderbird) lately, but more so for the build your own bloody mary bar on weekend afternoons - that place seems to get kinda douchey later on (it's a Broncos bar, so....surprise? Not so much), so that may not work for an after work, douche-free drink.
Finally, Pullano's on 51st and Thunderbird is pretty decent. Also a dive bar (but attached to a family Italian restaurant), they have decent drink specials ($1.50 domestic drafts) until 6pm (and again at 9 - close) and free pizza weekdays until 5pm (except Wednesday - free tacos, no $1.50 drafts). As you might be able to tell, I spend alot of time there...The one thing that really sucks about that place is they won't have music running unless someone is paying to play the jukebox, so that might be a deal breaker.
But it is cheap...Well, the drinks are anyways - the food is a delicious rip-off.
Good luck!
EDIT: Oh yeah, and Famous Sports (I think) on 35th Ave and Greenway is decent as well. Used to be a Famous Sams. 25oz mugs at reasonable prices. Tread carefully...

hehe I went there last night.you could try The Rogue West
The place is a dive (that's not a bad thing!), has a kick ass juke box, and free pool.
I must have gon on an off night, cuz it was way dead: other than me, the bar tender (a cute girl BTW), and some guy at the video gam thing, there were 2 old ladies in walkers. no shit.
I go there a lot. Great wings! Usually, after that, I disgrace myself, and go to the copper door next door to it.Finally, Pullano's on 51st and Thunderbird is pretty decent

Depending on how Northwest valley you are, I heard Tilted Kilt opened a bar in the arrowhead mall area. They are "ok" .
Lis Doon Varna is in that area too
Rosie McCaffrey's, 10th street and Camelback
and if you really want that drink flat beer with the "what the hell is that smell?" feel, George and Dragon just down the road at Central and Indian School. Its also rail accessable too.
