there seems to be formulas for these. Describe members of band and background but nothing on the music or a long string of comparisons to other bands or really generic descriptions with no depth whatsoever.

How does one do a proper music review?
I like the music I know, but I don't "live" in music.
I can't tell a competent band from a FUCKING GREAT one.

I wouldn't know how to describe a bands sound without comparing them to other acts?

its completely ok to compare to other acts but sometimes it reads like: "this band sounds like (insert band), (insert band), (insert band) and (insert band)"

they should say why they should be compared to others. what are the similarities, differences, styles?
I'm not sure that there is a proper way to write a music review, i just hate the formulas.

ps (this all came from a few reviews i read in the asu paper about bands i know and the reviews were terrible)

I agree, the ASU paper is terrible. I used to like to read it when I was a student there because it reminded me how much less of a nimrod I was than the people who wrote for it.
