Humans are nothing more than extremely well programmed machines, constructed out of flesh and blood, and this abstract concept called the "mind" is just another form of control, an illusion, a clever program to lead people to believe they think for themselves.

this is the thesis of an essay i wrote under my own "free will" if you are interested in philosophy, i openly encourage you to read it, the link is below : i am curious to see what others think on this, if you wanna discuss some of the ideas i present, my AIM sn is "icetitan94" i welcome everyone elses opinions

"Historians agree, that the mind developed early in the year 3000 B.C."

i had no idea 'historians' had not only tracked down the exact year in which the mind developed, but had actually pinpointed the season! amazing!

the idea that complexity is integrally linked to evolution is heatedly debated. evolution is better described as moving towards perfect adaptation to a given environment than as moving towards higher complexity, which itself is only a common byproduct of such adaptation. but then, what is the essense of complexity? is it in the means toward a given end, i.e. within the process, or is it in the end itself, i.e. within the ultimate function. is a computer program that requires 10,000 lines of code to play chess more complex than a program requiring 1000 lines of code to model metastability of organic compounds at the superheated hydrothermal vent fluid and near-freezing seawater interface? and are we, the 'thinking' humans, more complex than rice, which has upwards of 25% more genes in its genome than we have in ours?

i agree with you to the exent that we exist as nothing more than biochemical machines and that

the mind is only a product of a very specific combination of elements and chemicals.

however, i see the rational, conscious mind as a very real evolutionary accident; an error that will eventually be corrected ('free will' has the nasty habit of getting in the way of perfect adaptation, or of doing a specific job efficiently, as you put it), whereas a major paradox is created in your view of the mind, which is at once nothing and everything; both an illusion and the higher stage of evolutionary development.

i totally agree with you. to find more is only the result of searching for more and filling the gap with some sort of pleasing pseudoscience. intelligence and free will are very specialized adaptations, and the more specialized the developed function, the more binding it tends to be. being specialized makes a species flourish quickly, but they pay the price when change comes. just ask the dinosaurs.

- lions are the most powerful predators in africa... but often die of starvation from even very small injuries

- on a tropical island, a small freshwater lake has formed in the center. In this lake are jellyfish and other forms of life that have evolved to live in water that is so saturated with sulpher and sodium that it would kill most animals. They flourish, but the entire ecosystem can live nowhere else in the world.

- the wobbegong shark is perfectly invisible over coral, but when it moves over sand deposits for brief instances, it stands out in stark contrast

- humans are the most intelligent animal to have ever lived and have brains capable of complex abstract reasoning, but they kill by the millions over the byproduct of an inquisitive and creative mind... beliefs.

- the word kodak is almost synonymous with photograph... but yesterday the company announced a decision to cut dividents to just 50 cents a share from $1.80 in a downhill battle against the digital revolution.

so you see its just math, a formula for success that works anywhere, and fails with precision.

go to the show this saturday at chasers:

comparing the evolution of computers to humans gets a little hairy.

like computers, we are programmed whether we like it or not. but only humans make genetic copies of ourselves, or "do the nasty." Computers aren't in the business of obsessively reproducing themselves.

early computers were large inefficient multiple room affairs, now they're pretty small and blinding fast, and on the other hand we're enormous lazy assholes who couldn't start our own fires if our lives depended on it. Our ancestors were small, fast, and used resourses efficiently.

Computers grew up faster than we did too. If you look atfossils, we're still the same "machines" adapted for stone age living of 10,000 years ago. Look at all the overweight people;back in the stone age we didn't have hot-pockets, yo. Plus, although we think we're smarter, we're really not--we still like to beat the shit out of other people.

we have definitely advanced ourselves as well, we aren't glorifying over the invention of the wheel or that rubbing two sticks makes fire thing anymore.
I believe there will be a time when hardware will be able to reproduce, maybe not by doing the nasty. I would see it as being a very asexual process, but as
far as software goes I have spawning processes running all over the place on our servers.

It is amazing when working with computers how similar they are to humans, but that could also just be my mind wanting to humanize everything. Mechanics think
of their cars as woman, taking "her' for a ride, I am sure there are other things out there that people try to humanize in their mind my guitar is my baby, or what have you.

I think alot of things man has made have been somewhat in their own image, at least to a certain degree.

how's my baby, donald?

as far as the reproduction issue goes, i'm sure that we aren't too far away from hardware reproducing hardware, however do you see technological advances as a result of competition for space and resources between other reproducing machines? will Gov. Arnold travel back in time and take care of busness?

concerning machines reproducing themselves, it doesn't seem that distant. the way i see it, it would involve an automated factory that takes in raw material and produces robots from it. all it would require is a kind of search robot, programmed to seek out metals and such and return it to the factory for production. this does not seem that unrealistic. they could build robots that were programmed and whole existance is to find material and build more robots..interesting...

Every living thing eats and shits. We're part of an ecosystem, put here to eat things and then shit them out so other things can eat our shit, and then shit out more byproducts for something else to eat, so eventually we're just eating our own shit again, albeit processed into a more edible form. We reproduce so other humans can take our place eating and shitting, so other organisms can take on the role of eating and shitting... It seems silly, doesn't it?

So, where in the equation would machines fit into the eating and shitting part? Do they eat electricity and shit out heat? It takes more heat to make electricity. So where's the balance in the equation? There's no inherent cooling going on on the other side of the equation. They just seem to consume resources and not give anything back to the system.

A car needs gasoline to run, and basically shits out carbon monoxide, they fit in by providing us with transportation, it's quite a phenomenon. Cars are unable to feed themselves so they get their owners to do it for them. Kind of like what we do for our dogs and cats or what ants do with aphids

Computers need electricity and they spit out radiation upon us and probably some other stuff I am totally unaware of. Computers in a sense have their own ecosystem communicating with others being able to spread diseases and causing havoc among themselves and for their users.

as far as shitting and eating, I don't know what they shit but I am sure there is website somewhere out there dedicated to it.

Before the advent of computers and the Matrix trilogy ,folks were stuck with believing in evil spirits and a wide range of gods. Nice progression. Dont forget to put your machine philosphy to a good thrash beat. Mars Volta newest prog opus.
