And so did Jesse Helms. I am glad he is dead. What pisses me off is that he died on the 4th of July and I bet he would have appreciated that. It bugs me he gets that.

Jesse Helms ranks as my most hated politician in all of US History. Whatever I stand for he was the polar opposite. In my mind he was on the wrong side of everything. You hate Rush? Well he is the product of a state of mind that Helms helped create. But what makes it even more personal for me is that son-of-a-bitch was supposed to be my Senator. He gave North Carolina a bad reputation on a global stage.

I had a student in Mexico named Jose Antonio Poot who was accepted to be US Senate Page for a week. Before he went he studied the Helms-Burton act, which is a horrendous piece of legislation that deals with Cuba. Jose studied in my classroom everyday after school for a month before he went. He studied in my classroom while I graded papers so if he came across something he didn’t understand he could ask me right there. He wanted to be ready if he ever got the chance to talk to someone who mattered about that bullshit piece of legislation.

Jose bumped into Senator Helms in the hallway and said, “Senator Helms, may I talk to you for a minute?” Helms responded, “I don’t speak to international students.” That week in the Senate all the pages were international students.

Really, what a shithead. Any US Senator should be able to out argue any high school kid, no? And he blankets the entire rest of the planet as someone he doesn’t want to talk to?

So Jose chased him down the hall, saying the sound bites he had been preparing. Helms kept walking away saying over and over “I don’t speak to international students.” His aides were trying to stop Jose but wouldn’t physically touch him so Jose figured out he could keep walking after Helms. Finally Helms got to a door that Jose couldn’t get into.

When Jose was telling me the story he said, “Mr. Patterson, I am very sorry but I was so angry that I just blurted out ‘Senator Helms, not only am I an American but my U.S. Government teacher is from North Carolina and he tells me that you sir are an asshole!”

I told my student, “Jose, you have made me very proud.”

I will be at the fireworks thing at GCC, then probably finding a party to crash. How lame. Well, I guess it depends on the party...
