I was 17 going on 18, getting my heat broken, crying about it and listening to “Clarity”, “diary” & “Something to Write Home About”. Ten years later I’m still getting my heart broken, crying about it and listening to the same records (only this time on limited edition vinyl!) A lot has happened in that time though...
The first girl to break my heart, I met at The Get Up Kids show. No joke! From there on after I wore my heart on my sleeve, literally (I got an Alkaline Trio heart tattooed on my left arm.) Being the young and inexperienced man that I was, I felt like a robot without a heart, doomed to roam the world desperate and alone forever. That was until the next girl I met, who I fell for like a man with lead shoes being thrown into the ocean. I chronicled this event by getting the cupid robots, from The Get Up Kids’ “Something to Write Home About” tattooed on my wrists (ironic I know.) She ended up cheating on me, marrying the guy she cheated on me with and just had his child, so I got a marionette puppet from Cursive’s song ‘Driftwood’ tattooed on my right forearm, because I was played like a puppet. Shoot me; I’m the poster boy for “Emo.”
The whole time I found solace, compassion and understanding in the for-bands mentioned as well as many others. Their music (along with copious amounts of drugs and alcohol) helped get me through some of the toughest times of my life. Chances are if you were born between 1979-1985, bands like Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate or The Get Up Kids probably helped get you through some tough times as well. That’s why when Jimmy Eat World announced they would be doing a ten date tour for the ten year anniversary of their critically acclaimed album “Clarity” with other 90’s Emo-rock outfit No Knife, I couldn’t help but get their lyrics “can you still feel the butterflies” tattooed on my chest. Vowing to myself, to never get into another relationship again, unless I feel the girl will forever give me butterflies.
So when I heard The Get Up Kids would be following in the reunion footsteps of others before them and playing on Sunday, September 27th at The Clubhouse, I nearly choked up when I called all my friends to tell them about the show. I even thought about trying to get in touch the first girl who started it all and tell her about it as well, but then I realized if I don’t want to end up crying myself to sleep that night then I should probably keep my mouth shut. To quote a friend of mine, when I told him that Sunny Day Real Estate will also be playing Friday, October 9th at Marquee Theatre - “This will be like going to Church for religious people.” I may even have to get another tattoo to commemorate it.

-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.
