This year The Shizz seemed to really get a kick in the ass.
So many things started happening.
Shizz events, Shizz shows, and the new look.

Helped the shizz in its development of a shizz record label. (Did that effort go anywhere?)

yes. it's going slowly, but yes. we're going to launch some cool shit in the coming months, but we want to have everything organized and ready before we start talking about how awesome it is.

i like this thread a lot.

in 2009:
we released our third full length album and started recording an EP
we wrote a ton of great songs and i found myself making big technical leaps in my ability to play bass and keys
i lost my job and subsequently found another one the week before christmas
i spent 6 weeks at home with my son - i might never get to do that again
had some good tours (and bad ones) with the band
took some great vacations, including maui
became a much more proficient chef
organized shizzfest 1 and 2

generally speaking 2009 was actually kind of a down year, but a lot of cool shit happened. i have to think 2010 will be better.

2009 was a big year for me


I turned 21
Finished my sophmore year in college
Released The Hottest Day an Elephant Ever Lived(plug) with Yukon Ho!
Played at the marquee for the first time
Yukon Ho! came to an end
Moved in with a very lovely and attractive singer
made new friends
stopped playing music with dakota jeane
went to coachella
found a pretty little lady (for around 11 months before we split)
new president!

This was a good idea... a little odd, but with some effort I assembled a short list.

in '09 I:
Turned 32
Lost weight - almost 25 lbs, nearly at my ideal weight
Got somewhat in shape - run ~15mi/wk and cycle ~40-50mi/wk + a ton of pushups, situps, etc.
Lost a job on a Friday in July, had two job offers the following Monday, worked 3 jobs part time through the fall
Got some landscaping done at the house
Learned HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL
Wrote a php script that saved me around 5 months of tedious work for an ASU professor (getting paid through May, though)
Played ~12 shows with The Worrymen
Recorded a cd with The Worrymen
Bought/sold/traded too many guitars/amps/etc
Traded a broken-down MR2 for a BMW :-)
Helped work on some cool Shizz projects
Continued servering on the board of a local non-profit

in '09 I didn't:
get my dissertation proposal defended (ouch!)
get more work done remodeling our house (ouch!)
write enough songs or learn many new tricks on the guitar

Jeepers my achievements look lame when I read through the posts. Lol.

On the positive side, in 2009 I:

-Got married to the lovely Lkelly!
-Played music at my best friend's wedding in Seattle
-Vacationed @ Cannon Beach & Portland, Oregon.
-Went to friends' wedding in San Diego
-Saw many relatives I haven't seen in a long time
-Recorded & released album with my friends in TJS
-completed my class in Photoshop
-Got pretty much completely out of debt & hung on to my job
-worked out on a regular basis
-sold the Fender Bass, Takamine Acoustic, & now the Martin
-enjoyed quality time with a lot of cool friends
-realized my dream of having a pro artist do an original piece for an album cover
-made a video for my band
-drank many quality beers and wine
-saw good shows like the Mumlers, Black Heart Procession, Neal Halstead & more
-acquired the uncle spot outboard tube reverb, had the Jaguar refretted

7. Won the Phoenix Independents Bowl with band mates and friend Mark.

- bought a house downtown
- booked a show for Jimmy Eat World (at Modified no less!)
- hosted an Arizona party at SXSW that got me and some of my favorite bands on NPR
- produced more shows in a year than ever before (wont bother listing)


God my life is boring when I try and list this shit.

2009:
-played feel free's first shows in tucson and phoenix- a nice change of pace
-played our first flagstaff show with no age
-recorded and put out a split 7" with abe and will hopefully record at analog 513 again and again and again
-became full editor of the noise's music section (a northern arizona monthly)
-started working in Hozhoni's art program which is sweet because it prompted me to do my own visual art (first show in april) and i don't really look forward to weekends or mind going to work. i did get water thrown on me and cursed out today. artists.
-i learned to turn down this year. ten years playing live and i've always hid behind a big giant bass thud. it's a lot better when you can hear what's going on
-an english band covered a song from a band i was in, which is whatever, but it was very validating in a way- 'hey somebody listens to this, and they like it, holy shit!'
-got to see bonnie 'prince' billy, dinosaur jr, and a lot of good friends' bands (that's good friends with bands and friends with good bands)
-got to watch the suns whomp on the spurs the other night at the arena
-all in all it was a 'keep on going' type of year. i didn't get to do a lot of traveling outside of AZ so i'm looking forward 2010 in that sense

I feel like a completely different person now than I was at the beginning of this year. I've started being afraid of fewer things.

-I started living on my own, completely alone for the first time in my life.
-I lost my mental shit earlier in the year, and finally got help for some problems I've been having for years but was somehow convinced that they were normal/not important. Got on antidepressants which help me be the person I always wanted to be.
-I'm no longer terrified to get up in the morning.
-Made a whole bunch of awesome new friends and started doing things with my life.
-Faced my fears of driving long distances and being in unfamiliar places by first driving to Prescott, then Flagstaff, then going on tour with my band and driving 4000 miles across the country.
-Went on tour with my band and had the time of my life! Drove and parked in many, many unfamiliar locations! Stood on the Golden Gate Bridge and didn't jump!
-I can now turn my car on and off of Grand Avenue. I used to be too nervous.
-Followed my heart for once. Well...twice.

This is all great stuff. Kudos to you, ma'am.

Finding this site and seeing some really cool local bands this year!

Since September, I have lost 35 lbs. I have a long way to go, but it’s a start.

I have started going out more socially, and made some new friends which is a hard thing for me to do, personally.

I have kept my job, despite cutbacks at work.

I started restoring my first car, which I have had since 1987. I had engine and transmission rebuilt and installed them myself, with help from my brother.
