so because of all this wonderful rain we've been receiving this winter, the bare earth in both my front and backyards has turned into a jungle of weeds. Some are over 3 feet in height! (i'm lazy)

Yesterday i finally decided to tend to my jungle with the lawn mower but before i did, i did some research on what was growing in my yard and found 2 varieties of edible plants!

London Rocket

which tastes very mustard-y and spicy

and Shepherd's Purse

which can be used to "pepper" a salad

anyone know any good recipes using these plants?

anyone know any other edible weeds that are prolific in the southwest?

I would gladly feast on this menaces remains.

yeah im sore too. :(

i did also learn that the leaves of that london rocket plant are used by Bedouin tribes as a tobacco substitute. i'm kinda wanting to learn how to dry and smoke them.

it also looks like Cheeseweed is growing in my backyard

Cheeseweed (Malva parviflora) Also known as Common mallow, Cheese mallow:
It is a very vigorous mounding plant with dark green leaves and seed pods that resemble wheels of cheese. The small plants and shoots are edible green or cooked as are the seed pods.

ugh, I wouldn't eat cheeseweed...

most of the mustards are edible (which account for many of our weeds, and there are dozens of varieties). mostly peppery greens... bumper crop this spring :-)

chenopods are edible, so are amaranths. I think you can actually buy amaranth flakes at some stores.

my wife's into this stuff, I can ask her if she has any specific suggestions.

the london rocket is spicy and mustard tasting. i think it would go good with chorizo or a spicy sausage. lamb?

maybe fish

for me, it's too overpowering alone. it needs to be paired with meat or something.

I'd take smoke-able weeds over edible ones any day.
