i went in July a few years ago... it was awesome.
HCM is good for a couple of days, but everywhere else is so much nicer so get out of there as quick as possible. i spent a few days in the mekong delta which was obscenely hot and mosquitoey, not really a big fan.
I would fly up to Hanoi and book a island tour in Ha Long Bay if i were you, that was by far my favorite part. Sa Pa is good (mountains), Hoi An is cool (cheap tailors and beaches), Nha Trang is good (snorkeling/diving), Mui Ne is great (beaches/sand dunes), Hue is really great (really old city center w/ no cars), yeah, just get up to Hanoi and trek back to HCM.
oh yeah, it's going to be stupid hot and humid too.

i dont plan on being in HCMC for more than a day, then it's off to the beaches.
did you do the Cu Chi tunnels? i've been getting a lot of recommendations on them.

those are the network of tunnels that were dug during the war, yeah?
a girl i dated maybe 7 or 8 years ago went there and said the tunnels freaked her out. totally claustrophobic and terrifying, but ultimately fascinating. that's one of the only things i remember her telling me about her visit.
well, that and the fact that her dad had married a vietnamese lady a few years earlier and they went back to meet a bunch of family. and one of the other family members was trying to get out of vietnam and bring his family to the US, and he paid this girl $10,000 to marry him so he could get to the US and establish residency and bring his family over. this all went down a couple years before i even met her, but a couple of dates in she's like "hey, i need to tell you something..." and that was an awkward conversation. anyway, we dated for maybe 8 months and towards the end of it she was having to go through the whole interview process with INS to prove the marriage was legit, and they were NOT buying it. i guess something was fishy about a 22 year old american girl falling in love with a 45 year old vietnamese guy while on a family vacation. i don't think she got arrested or anything, but i'm pretty sure it didn't end well.
that's literally everything i can tell you about vietnam.

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.
