words are very important and are helping convince people to support legislation that is infringing on their own rights.

the xenophobic and racist groups that are behind these movements are very smart in using the words "illegal" and "alien" and "anchor babies"

This about it. They've created a phrase to describe American citizens that makes them seem not human, not American, not a citizen. when you can dehumanize and generalize and group people into "legal" and "not legal", then you can create an "us vs. them" scenario. Then you can rally more and more people to your cause.
