Hey everyone, I'm fairly new to the Phoenix area, which means I'm extremely new to the Phoenix music scene. I have been fortunate enough to hook up with a good group of guys that were short a bass player. Since my tenure with the band we've only played a select few places, I'd really like for us to expand beyond our comfort zone and play some more venues. Some of the venues we have already played are The Rogue Bar, Hollywood Alley, The Sail Inn, and we'll be doing an upcoming gig at a new one for us called 910 live.

Things I learned I liked and disliked about venues. The overall feel of the place, how the management treats you, it's location, if the booker has their act together or not, and stage area/sound set up.

So, with that in mind, what's your favorite venue, where would you recommend to play at... and why?

dude, this is phoenix. every location sucks, all the bookers are flakes, and sound is shitty everywhere.

i'm partial to smaller galleries and house shows - they're more intimate. although if you're looking for professional sound or stage lighting you're not going to get it. yucca and rogue are both pretty good from a bar standpoint. trunk space is one of my favorites (gallery and venue at 15th ave and grand), but it's definitely a different vibe than other bars/clubs.

And you're not going to believe this, but we actually did a house party with you about year ago! I remember the Emperors of Japan, we played in someone's back yard, David Wierch's I believe, there was a bunch of hay bales all around people were sitting on. It was actually my first gig with the band I'm with now (Curium) It was pretty interesting because I had to learn about a dozen songs in about a months time period for that house party!

I remember the Emperors of Japan, we played in someone's back yard, David Wierch's I believe, there was a bunch of hay bales all around people were sitting on. It was actually my first gig with the band I'm with now (Curium) It was pretty interesting because I had to learn about a dozen songs in about a months time period for that house party!

I think I went to this show and hung out with EOJ also. Like in South Phoenix, right?

oh, hell yeah! i remember that show. it was like out in south phoenix farm territory. yeah, quezo was there, and i think toby from former friends. fun night. that dude should host more shows - he had a stage in his backyard and tons of space. and of course the haybales to sit on.

My favorite places to play of lately have been Lost Leaf Gallery and the Ice House Tavern. Though these venues probably wouldn't be so great for certain kinds of bands (like a large band that needs an extensive PA system setup).

The Rhythm Room is pretty decent to play, though I've never directly dealt with the manager.

The original Nita's was an amazing place to play. RIP

I have been enjoying playing at Lost Leaf as of late. (that's where most of our recent gigs have been)

Hollywood Alley is an awesome place to play. Steve McDonald is probably one of the best live audio engineers out there.
Though watch out if you get on his bad side. He can make you sound amazing if he likes you.

I had amazing times playing at Holgas outside. I think Sweetbleeders first gig was there.

Hmm. New Long Wongs has a good stage and it sounds good. +1!

Been too long since I have played at Trunk Space. Must be remedied soon. Epic venue

I also miss Paper Heart. I ride my bicycle past it twice daily. RIP

Anyone remember AUX?

I really enjoyed playing jazz at the Arizona Club last year. We don't play there anymore (i think it went under). I would zone out during something
like Blue Moon and stare out the 30' windows from the 38th floors 180 degree view. Nothing like it.

I liked playing the Rialto Theater stage. Only done it once, but it was great to play to a packed house there.

Also, some of my favorite shows ever have been at Congress. Partying so hard there, especially after the shows, and almost getting banned from playing there ever again. This happens every time.

Monte Vista in Flag. See Congress.

Plush in Tucson has a great stage and a soundman who gets all drunk with you and goes all fanboy. lol

Casbah in San Diego is rad. Especially since my favorite band (currently) just played there and it was awesome and I was there.

The Smell. You know it if you've been there. Something charming about constant shit smell, BO, transvestite hooker bars and street(alley?) hot dogs. mmm

The stage at Yucca is great, though I kinda miss how it was before the changeover.

What am I missing?
