-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

yea so i finally got into the google search band name and mediafire so i could start getting some music, and i downloaded an iron lung file, opened it pulled them out dropped on my desktop then from there dropped them into itunes. (not sure why i can't directly drop them from the file to itunes, might be part of the problem. so then i played a couple songs and everything is cool, and i decide to clean up the songs off the desktop and put them in my music folder. i go back to itunes and try to play the songs again and it says it can't find the files. then went to my music file pulled out said songs dropped them back onto the desktop, went to itunes and it works again? any help with where i can put these songs so i'm not crowding up my desktop and will still let itunes play them?
Whoever answers this for a fellow neophyte will be a big help. I put things on my ipod right away because iTunes won't play them after like 5 minutes.

you do realize that our combined age is nearly 100 and we are having problems with things that an 11 year old could probably fix right???

so you've got itunes playing this song, which it thinks is located on your desktop. then you go and clean it off the desktop, and itunes says "hold on a second, we made a link to this file, and it's no longer where you said it was". fail.
what you should probably do, rather than dump the file on your desktop, is dump the file into the actual itunes folder. NOT just dragging it into itunes, but going in to mydocuments/music/itunes (or however it's organized on your PC) and putting the file into that folder. THEN drag it into the library. that's where all your files are stored anyway.
does that make sense? i typed fast, so maybe i didn't articulate it, but that's the gist of it.

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

my itunes under the start button do i take the zip and drag it to that, or do i open the zip and copy all the songs then drag them to the itunes icon listed under the start button?
i don't think my itunes is located under my music.

I "open" the mediafire file instead of "saving" it, then I extract it to in my case, my external hard drive. Just extract the music to the place on your computer you want it to stay, whether it be the desktop, my music, whatever. As previously said, iTunes has a fit if you move a file and then try to play it again.

ok so i'm going to run through this in my mind,
my itunes under the start button do i take the zip and drag it to that, or do i open the zip and copy all the songs then drag them to the itunes icon listed under the start button?

eeep. no.
itunes is just a way to organize all your music and make it pretty.
the songs themselves are actually stored in folders somewhere on your hard drive. itunes just takes all that info and puts it in a list and makes it easy to play/organize. so what you need to do is get those files into the actual folders where all the rest of your itunes stuff is stored. for example, on my computer it's all under C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music
i don't expect yours is the same, but it's stored on there somewhere. you've got a folder on your computer where all those songs are actually stored in folders. you need to put them there.

At work on my PC, i download it, then put all my music downloads (yes I download music on a work computer) in a folder called downloads. Then click play on the actual song files and it opens in Itunes. Just keep that folder and you should be fine. BUUUT you really should just get an Imac.

by default on a PC itunes will install its itunes folder to your Music folder under My Documents. try there first...or run a find or search for the itunes folder.
ok so i have a my music folder on my desktop i should open the zip copy the songs drop into my music. and that will work?

as long as you don't delete the songs out of there after you drag them to itunes, yes.
but i wouldn't keep them there. i would find the folder dan's talking about and put them there. keep everything in one spot, dude. trust me.
