really well done despite Johnny Knoxville being in it.
this city will never die.
it's kinda crazy how "everyone" said the city represented the death of the american dream (and yeah it kinda did but over the last 25 years)
but it now represents the birth of a new american dream (at least to me), everyone and their mother is fucking DIYing it up in Detroit.
The place looked like Chernobyl for years and now? DIY farmer's market, cheap local business heaven.
from hearing what the locals are saying about Detroit, it kinda reminds of me phoenix, specifically the parts about feeling they have ownership over their city, because of the available opportunities there. I feel the same way about phoenix.
I move to new york or chicago or LA or portland, i dont feel ownership over those cities because they are already wonderful and amazing (ok not LA but...) and made. i feel ownership over phoenix because i feel it's like a blank canvas that anyone can come in and add too.
it's very liberating.
anyways check out the video, it's cool. growing up in illinois, i often went to detroit to visit friends or drive thru on my way to other places and it is very shocking how empty it is and how there are all these huge empty buildings everywhere, michigan central is pretty much what greets you when you enter the city from the south and it's haunting. but that gives the city character, it's kind of charming in a way....
also i really want to fuck Phil Cooley now

i dig ajj's "lady liberty" lyric that says something about leaving to portland or somewhere else to escape shittiness in phoenix or staying here and working on the place you're from. couldn't find the actual lyric but hearing him yell it at the gaslight anthem show was fucking rad. i don't wanna go somewhere that's already "open-minded" or "liberal." i wanna make my own backyard less shitty.

is this basically saying that more mobilized, motivated hipsters who get priced out of silverlake, williamsburg, georgetown, north/south park, portland (across the bridge), etc, can go to detroit and create their dreams aping black culture?
fair enough.
