i think maybe there's two definitions of hipster.

there's the original definition, which i think would come from jazz and beats and those dudes, like 'hep cat,' man, and a lot of donald's definition falls into that: knowing about and being passionate about obscure cultural references that are cool, of which we are all indeed hipsters. aging, yes, but hipsters none the less and i have no problem with it. fashion has little to nothing to do with it and i like these hipsters and it's generally easy to have a conversation with them (you), where as with most people i am quite socially inept.

but then there's the dudes with the bikes with one gear and the tight, tight pants and the expensive, expensive hair and the big, big glasses and the ironic facial hair and tattoos and maybe they like cheap beer and maybe they don't but they like really shitty music. of which you find many at the bikini lounge, but they never seem to make it into the trunkspace, at least the shows i attend. and, yes, they are cooler than you. i think maybe it's like goth was in the eighties. or grunge in the 90s, a lifestyle choice one passes through until one realizes it's a bit silly and they can spend their later years laughing at themselves and their funny outfits, but still digging the soundtrack, much of which is still cool. except for those hardcores who just stick with it until it really is just sad, like the guy with the big 'sXe' tat at the end of the bar, passed out in his beverage of choice.

Although, umm, I have facial hair... but... it's not like I'm trying to say anything with it.

I think a lot of what you said boils down to intent, to me. Using the fashion example (which many subcultures seem to get remembered by in the future anyway) you can not care how you look (first group)... but then some try to look like they don't care how they look (second group). That bugs the shit out of me.
