I mainly wanted to post this to gloat a little bit: the worrymen record released earlier this year got picked by the Americana Rock Mix podcast/website as one of the top albums of the year (!) in company with band of horses, gaslight anthem, avett bros, robert plant, two cow garage, glossary, etc... granted he had some rules for his list that favored a band like us, but still, flattered :-)

Any other lists we want to make or link to?

Thanks! we're about the only weekender/hobbyist band on the list, so we're way flattered. Recorded the album mostly one Sunday afternoon last October... "production" is minimal, to say the least :-)

10 non-local bands I got turned onto this year:

(yeah, several are years or decades old - but new to me)

Sleigh Bells (mainly just that one infinity guitars song!)
Gaslight Anthem (not the new album)
Two Cow Garage
Ha Ha Tonka
The National
Frightened Rabbit
The Hold Steady (not the new album either)
Big Star
Best Coast (kinda)
Tarkio

can you tell, I'm bored at work....

We're doing the best in comics down in the minibosses forum, so stop in there 'n say hi. the cOMIcs thread.

Year End List . . .
Best record stuff is hard, but I really think the Sheriff Joe 4 way split that Abe put together was outstanding.
Even if ya'll didn't like the songs of the sentiment, the brass & cash he used to pull it together is really impressive. Have to say it should be getting more press across the country.

I also dug on the Michelle Blades release a lot, it winds up on the TS house system very regularly.
same w/ the DESTOROYA release.
I spent a lot of time this year listening to Randy Newman's Harps & Angels.
Which I think was technically a 2009 release, but played out well across 2010 for me.

Father's Day did TWO Cds this year, a studio set and a live-in-studio that covered a lot of the same material.
For my buck, the 602radio one is the one to beat. The studio lp does have some nice t*ts on the cover tho.

Other stuff, it was a pretty good year for films. I didn't see many tho.
The Iron Man II looked all pretty 'n sh*t when it was onscreen, but it was a bloody mess of 1/2 realized ideas by the end. Wasted talent across the board, and [I don't care how much you want to f*ck her] Scarlet Johansson was just not believable as Black Widow.

Much better in the Superhero genre was DEFENDOR a direct to video piece starring Woody Haralson as a semi-retarded street avenger type. You might think it was a comedy from the description, but it played out w/ some real pathos.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was good, I haven't read the comic but I hear it was a good adaptation. I think it suffered commercially because it was much more/exactly what audiences expected. If that makes sense.

Machete was probably the best guilty pleasure. I still can't figure out what Robert Dinero was doing in this, but there was so much why the f*ck not fun tossed all over it, I say turn it into a drinking game and let it live forever. I'm looking forward to "Hobo With A Shotgun" cuz Rutger Hauer OWNS you.

Despicable Me was the best Pixar movie Pixar didn't make; tho it did feel like one of those 80s Don Bluth 'trying to hard and failing' animated movies.
I'd love to see it as a Sunday night cartoon on Fox. The idea of the villain as central character has lots of good possibilities.

This was also the year I discovered webcomics and really started giving a damn.
Achewood still tops my list, even if the last 3 months have been a lead weight.
MS Paint Adventures is epic when it's on, and just great when it's coasting--how many writers can you even say that about?
The Non-Adventures of Wonderella are exactly the life I'd live if I were a lady superhero
Kate Beaton's 'slice of life' stuff is okay, but man you GOTTA read her parody/updates of classic lit. Just rules.

Outside pop culture, the Dem's got OWNED this year.
It makes me sad to vote for a party who can organize so well when it comes to getting a candidate elected, but then their constituents immediately turn into disorganized squabbling rats on a sinking ship.
Every victory that should've been a cake walk was like a 12 round boxing match decided by a lenient judge.
I consider myself moderate for the most part, and when I look at candidates strong roots count more then shinny apples and the Dems look like a buncha trees in a windstorm lately.

. . . did I ramble.
Oh sh*t ya I rambled.

Randy Newman rules! I love that record.

I liked Iron Man II. It wasn't as good as the first, my favorite comic book movie (take that Batman) but I thought it was pretty decent, the main problem being that it tried to tie in too many plot lines for films that don't exist yet. and now Jon Favreau's gone, so i'm not expecting much from 3, if they choose to go there. I think the last really good movie i saw in the theater was Inglorious Basterds, which was '09 i think. but i liked Due Date (pretty much for the same reason I liked Iron Man II- Robert Downey Jr can do no wrong) and i liked The Other Guys way more than i thought i would. i missed Machete unfortunately, and i missed Red, which i also wanted to scope, but i have to imagine True Grit will win my fav movie of the year. did anybody see A Serious Man? total masterpiece! i liked the trailer for Defendor, it made me feel like i just saw the movie.

I really liked Dennis Lehane's new book, it was amazing. and I liked Barry Eisler's 'Inside Out' but you have to read 'Fault Line' first.

oh, and i forgot French Quarter 'It's Not Just Kissing'

I'm happy the U.S. military finally figured that everybody's the same sexuality in a flag covered box, and the community radio bill that just passed is a good one. and prop 203! it's still a one party system if you ask me, nothing's changing there. i do prefer the republicrats that can articulate themselves, and when they do, their rhetoric at least somewhat reflects actual reality. but whatever.
