NU: (Native + You) at the Heard Museum Phoenix
The Heard Museum’s free Third Friday series, NU (Native + You), continues on January 21 with diverse offerings, perfect for an affordable date night. Guests of NU can enjoy live music by Monophonic Hillside, a $5 wine sampling and $5 gourmet taco bar along with a lecture by Tempe artist Jacob Meders.
From 6 to 8:30 p.m., Monophonic Hillside will play in the Ikea Lounge and bar area.... The Phoenix-based group’s music has been referred to as moody “desert noir with ambient, desert meanderings hued in supernatural darkness.” The band is composed of Tabitha Hufman, Matt Wiser, J.D. Saari, Luke Mathers and Jay Hufman, who all come from a variety of past musical projects in Arizona and beyond.
From 6 to 7:20 p.m., a special $5 wine sampling will be hosted by The Café at the Heard Museum in the Berlin Gallery. Guests can partake of a variety of wines as they browse new artwork for sale in the showcase "Resurfaced: Jacob Meders + Alex Pena". At 7:30 p.m. in the Berlin Gallery, young artist Jacob Meders (Mechoopda Maidu) will present a short talk discussing the creative process behind his work. Meders lives in Tempe, where he is a 2011 MFA candidate at Arizona State University. His work focuses on altered perceptions of place, culture and identity built on the assimilation and homogenization of indigenous peoples. Meders’ work is available for sale in the Berlin Gallery as part of the Resurfaced showcase, which opens the evening of NU.
Guests can enjoy free admission to the museum from 5:30 to 9 p.m. along with a $5 gourmet taco bar in The Café at the Heard Museum from 6 to 8 p.m. The Café’s tacos took home several prizes at the first annual Arizona Taco Festival and are not to be missed.
From 5:30 to 9 p.m., the museum galleries, courtyard, IKEA Lounge and cash bar are open as part of NU. There is no admission charge for NU and the museum during Third Fridays.
