Del Mar (not too far from SD) also has a number of good restaurants, but a bit more "upscale". There is a place called the Beach Grass Cafe that has a tremdously delicous breakfast. I'll try to remember other restaurants. FYI, Del Mar and Carlsbad have some very beautiful beaches as well.
Don't know anything about Legoland.
I've been to Sea World, but don't think I will ever go back after watching a documentary called The Cove. Not to get all crazy or anything but I just can't support the idea anymore.

The family is headed to san diego next month for a week long vacation. So far we have hiking in Torrey Pines State Park, Legoland (we gave Julia a choice between this and Sea World and she picked Legoland) and riding bikes planned (probably going to rent bikes since we don't own any). John wants to check out a guitar shop (not sure which one). Anyone have suggestions/feedback on any of the things I've mentioned. Last time we went to San Diego we rented bikes from Hamels. They were fine. I have never been to sea world or legoland. Any good restaurant recommendations?
Balboa park is right by the Zoo and a ton of museums.
My gf and I rented a bike there to ride. It was fun.

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

Filippi's Pizza Grotto in Little Italy is the bomb pizza. There is nothing to compare it to. Show up early because there is a line down the block at dinner time every night of the week.
Extraordinary Desserts has some of the bestest desserts I've ever had. They have new stuff every day.
Balboa Park is great, there's all kinds of stuff to do there. You could spend at least a day there and barely spend any money.
Super Sound Music in Escondido is a pretty rad guitar store, but it's also pretty dense. They have some pretty rare/boutiquey stuff, but it's a little like digging through someone's attic. That's where I first found my Tokai flying V and fell in love with it.
+1 for Pizza Port, but I've only been to the one in Solana Beach.
Coronado is cool to check out. There's a ferry you can take from somewhere near the Midway over to Coronado. Then I think you can rent bikes and go over to the other side by the beach and some crazy huge homes.

I seem to remember the Gaslamp District being cool, but it's been a while since I've been to San Diego.

Yes, gas lamp district is the only place to be. It's like how Mill used to be, times ten.
I highly recommend the stage bar and grill. it's badass.

I'd heard good things about Center City Music in the past, but googling it not only is their website gone, but not to many people had good things to say. Super Sound looks pretty cool. I'll definitely check it out if we can combine it with a trip to Stone Brewery, which is also in Escondido.Super Sound Music in Escondido is a pretty rad guitar store, but it's also pretty dense. Last time we went to san diego we had Luigis on the Beach. They have the biggest slice of pizza i have ever seen. Here is a picture of me with a slice. Definitely photo worthy..
We went to Stone Brewery last time we were in SD. It's at least a 30 minute drive from where we are staying but I would go back. That place is just awesome.

If I recall correctly, Super Sound is only like 10 minutes from Stone Brewery. That's where I went after the first time I went to Super Sound.

Food is good, too. I went there last October, when I stayed at cardiff by the sea camping grounds, near Encinitas.

I played the best Les Paul I have ever played at Center City. A Jeff Beck Custom shop. I think it was like 15K.
