Have you checked it out yet? This is a great venue at a decent location and it has an awesome stage.
How come they don't get national acts to play there ever?

Place just opened, they need to make the connections before national acts happens, and since Stateside just opened its own venue, I'm sure most of the stuff will head to the Crescent Ballroom first.
Aside, from what I understand the place is run by theater folks, they're more interested in using it for that, w/ concerts as just a way to fill out open dates.

Who would pour a quarter million dollars into a venue here? Was their stage made of diamonds? It is sad to see another venue close down, but it doesn't sound like they were being very realistic.

The article reminded me how much I hate it when people complain about the lack of culture and fun things to do in Phoenix, and then stay at home to watch TV instead of supporting the culture we DO have, which would encourage more to develop.

I've been working within walking distance of that shopping center for 10 years and I've seen many, many businesses come and go. It's nice and the rent's probably really high. Maybe he wanted to tap into the "ASU crowd"? That doesn't seem to exist really. Or maybe he was hoping for foot traffic from people who go to the Improv regularly? Those seem like reasonable reasons to undertake this kind of thing in that location. However, there's a reason why there aren't any cool indie venues right around ASU - there's no market for it. If you want to put together a low rent performance space, a high rent Tempe shopping center just doesn't seem like the place to do it.
