#1422349 Controversial game opinions zone

Posted by Ivan Hakštok on 17 May 2020 - 12:48 PM

Vagrant Story is on a lot of lists of best rpgs no one ever played, so has anyone actually played it here?  Good game or no?

I liked Vagrant Story a lot. I've beaten it several times, including the new game plus extra stuff. It has a great story and soundtrack, but figuring out the battle system and the weapons crafting system can take a while. And if you don't figure it out, even regular enemies can get really difficult.

#1421251 Best Official VGM Arrange Album

Posted by Ivan Hakštok on 04 May 2020 - 09:50 PM

I've already seen it mentioned in the thread a few times, but it's worth mentioning again and again: nothing will ever top Xenogears Creid.

By the way, the live versions of Creid songs from the Xenogears 20th anniversary concert are also awesome, especially Lahan.

Congrats to the top 3!

4th place is better than I expected after hearing the entries, this was really a crazy month. Also, big thanks to Sixto for helping me out (he did the FF6 leads and the 3:06 guitar solo). This arrangement came to me in a dream after trying to beat the pull-up minigame in the FF7 remake for like an hour and going to sleep immediately afterwards. Woke up in the morning and immediately recorded a rough bassline for the first 2-2.5 minutes, then I did the rest of it over the next two days. I'm not usually the guy to cover themes that have been way overdone such as these FF ones, but I figured this kind of mashup would be pretty fresh.

#1420623 DoD Free Month Entries and Discussion

Posted by Ivan Hakštok on 28 April 2020 - 01:00 PM

This month is craaaaaaazy.

Here are some reviews:

Baba Is You - Rocket Is Dust
Nice chips. Intro goes on a bit too long. I like the sound, mixing chips and guitars is always a plus. This song is good exectuion-wise, but it's just too repetitive for my taste.
Batman [NES] - Punch Punch
Nice take on this source. I really like the rhyhtm guitars. My only nitpick with this is that it could've been longer, but since it doesn't stray away from the source too much, keeping it short is also a good idea.
Blazing Chrome - Time to Blaze
Holy shit, I love the sound of this right from the start. Good rhythm tone, also the drums and synths are 80s to the max. I just wish there was a kickass guitar solo for the outro, but this is still great.
Chrono Trigger - The Secret of the Forest
Interesting spin on the source. I think the vocals should've dropped in sooner, and I wish there was more going on in the background, maybe some more synth work or more backing vocals. I really like the change 5 minutes in, but again, it probably should've happened sooner in the song. Interesting idea, goes on for a bit too long.
Contra 3: The Alien Wars, Contra 4 - Let's attack aBRASSively!
Bonus points for the brass. Also, nice bass. The snare sound a bit weird to me, maybe not enough smack or a bit too much room. I really like this arrangement.
Environmental Station Alpha - 6-bit
Really good lead tone, and I like the atmosphere you're trying to create. There's something off about the balance, the kick is too much in front compared to the rest of the drums, and the lead guitars are way in the back. The arrangement is
Final Fantasy 5, Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 7 - Let The Decisive Battle On The Big Bridge Begin!
Great combination of the themes, I like that this is not just a straightforward medley. The solo at round 3:10 is great. The kick is a bit too much thump and not enough thwack, if you get what I mean. Pretty good arrangement.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses - God Shattering Star
Oh wow. I did not expect vocals like this. This sounds awesome.
Mega Man 6 - templant man
Chillax to the max. I wish the intro rhythms kept playing together with the lead guitars. Ohshit, FM breakdown. Great idea. This last part lacks low end, you probably could've layered the FM bass with another synth bass.
Mega Man - Elec Man (Cello Version)
Nice source tune selection, nice cello playing... but that's everything I can say about this. Not much arranging or production going on.
Metal Slug - Starry Cinnamon Skies
Funky and lovely. Good arrangement and sound. But you gotta work on those lead chops, your vibrato is a bit lacking.
NieR: Automata - Milonga del Carnaval de las Máquinas Tristes (Milonga from the Carnival of the Sad Machines)
Accordion is always a big plus for me. Good arrangement, but for my own taste a bit too long considering the limited instrumentation.
Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom - Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
Nice drums, but the first part gets repetitive quickly. I really like the synths. Not a fan of the transitions between the sources.
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures - Pac-Man 2: 1 Guitar
Cool style, done nicely. Not much else to say. Great clean tone.
Pictionary - Pictiognarly: Shred the Wet
Great lead tone! I like the combination of synths and guitars. The arrangement feels kinda short, especially since there's lots of cool stuff going on in the song.
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire - My Body Is Regi
It's like this song can't decide whether to go full techno or full metal so it just gets stuck in limbo. Instrument balance is all over the place, and I'm not feeling the transitions between each section. Your rhythm tone is great though.
Punch-Out!! - Finished with Mike Tyson
I can notice some good ideas in the arrangement, but the execution isn't there. Drum mix is kinda weak. Whoa, did you get a bit... paranoid there?
Resident Evil 4 - SAVE LEON K
Is this the first ever RE4 mix on DoD? I like this groove. Gets a bit repetitive but I guess that's due to the source material and the style.
Terranigma - Sleepy Seaport
Rhythms might be a bit too loud here. The arrangement is okay but I wish it got more powerful as the song went on.
Undertale, Touhou 4: Lotus Land Story - That's Bullet Hell You're Walking Into
Damn, I was gonna say the intro sounds a bit weak but then it went all crazy and I love it! The synths and the beat are awesome. Guitars are a bit lacking in expression compared to what I'm used to hearing in this style but they don't detract from the rest of the song.
Ys 6: The Ark of Napishtim - Ocean SpraYs
Great rhythm tone. The kick sounds a bit clicky for my taste. Lead playing is also great and clean. I hoped it would end on a crazy guitar solo, but this is fine too.

#1418539 PUNCHFEST 24! - Last one before world ends?

So cool!!

What's your audio routing setup for streaming?  OBS?  Does OBS recognize your mic and Reaper audio, or did you have to do something extra to set it up?

I put the Reastream plugin on the master channel in Reaper and set it to send the signal, then I put the same plugin on an audio channel in OBS and set it to receive the signal (OBS can load VST plugins). Microphone also went through Reaper, I turned on the monitoring on the mic track and disabled the input recording.

Congrats PuD/Tiberian Sons! Like I said in the reviews, Full Mast is one of the best DoD songs ever, and your cover is on the same level! Great stuff!

Now, about my entry: for years I've wanted to cover Inhabitants of the Dwelling, because it's one of the most creative songs in DoD history and because norg is a cool dude whose songs were among the first DoD songs I've ever listened to.

So, with my entry I wanted to do a couple of things:

- Cover norg

- Pay tribute to DoD

- Do stuff I've never tried before, in this case making a 20+ minute song

I decided to go with relatively new DoD inhabitants for each robot master. I couldn't hide my terrible accent so I pronounced my name wrong intentionally to maybe throw people off. I'm glad people liked it enough to vote it 2nd! Thanks everyone!

Chrono Trigger - Time - Lavos - Chance
I love this right from the start. Great sounds, including the vocals.
Ghosts 'n Goblins, Mega Man 7, Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest - Nobody:  Me: Treat Suite, but now it's under 20 minutes
19 minutes? Well, the title didn't lie. Nice vocals. I actually think the drums fit better like this than if they were mixed more in front. The synth lead seems a bit loud, and not expressive enough. Vocal harmonies 8 minutes in are pretty nice. I really appreciate the effort put into this, but some of the parts do get repetitive.
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda - Full Mast
Incredible. I know it might be blasphemous to say this but this is on the same level as the original, and the original is one of the greatest songs in DoD history!
Mass Effect 3 - Leaving Earth
Nice intro. Baaaaaaaaam! Excellent intro, actually. Snare might be too compressed, it doesn't sit that well in the mix. I wish the bass had a little more grit to it, because it sounded really good in those few parts where it was audible.
Mega Man 2 - New Inhabitants of the Dwelling: The Return of the Secret of the Electric Boogalooze (Part 1)
Haha, "I understood that reference", the song. Artist impressions sound ok to me buuut you pronounced my name wrong. I really need to teach you guys how to properly pronounce it. Kept me interested for the whole 20 minutes, so I guess the song's ok.
Mega Man X - Six-Stringed Sniper
Everything seems in background compared to the bass, you gotta bring those drums and guitars more in front! The guitar playing is pretty good though. Lots of boomines in some parts, make sure you high-pass everything that doesn't need that low end!
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon - Back at the Finja Shack
Damn, another one where I love the original, and you've pretty much nailed it. Great lead guitar at around 3 minutes. The mix sounds a bit muddy in parts.
Ninja Gaiden - The Masked Devil
I like your drum sound. Great lead playing. Great song overall.
Silent Hill - Out for a Stroll
Don't be afraid to bring that kick drum more in front. The constant velocity on the snare in the main beat is pretty noticeable. Nice tremolo picking clean.
Tales of Phantasia - The Feels 2 - The Return of the Sequel's Revenge Part 2 Turbo (Electric Boogaloo)
Nice intro, I dig the acoustic. The kick, the bass and the rhythm guitars are all competing for the same low end space, gotta carve things up with eq there. Sudden ending, ok I guess.

#1417874 Shizz Attack @ your house on Saturday 3/28

Posted by Ivan Hakštok on 29 March 2020 - 03:20 PM

fwiw, the best score i got in NES Tetris yesterday was only 48k or so. Not much compared to Hakstok's 169k back on page 10.

I tried playing the online Tetris version today and the best I could do was around 60k. It seems noticeably faster than the NES version, but it gives you a slightly bigger window of opportunity to do adjustments at the last moment. So, I guess a different playstyle is required for both, it all depends on what you're used to.

None because no one organized anything. You can still make it happen though! 28+ hours left!

My organization is as follows:

everybody play Tetris at some point in the day, either the original NES release (not Tengen) or tetris.com/play-tetris

at some point post your high score via screenshot or a photo or something.

the winner gets to say that they won

if you want to stream your plays that's fine

Yo I thought I'd give this a go.

NES version (NTSC), played on an emulator, starting at level 10.
