#1406532 Blasphemous (yet another new SotN-meets Dark Souls game)

Posted by mrtame on Yesterday, 02:08 PM

So I am most of the way done with this game. I will say it was kind of a struggle to get into it. And at this point I really don’t care what the story is about because it’s still too obtuse and not interesting enough to work at understanding it. The game itself doesn’t exactly get better but after a while and getting several upgrades, it becomes far less tedious. Though I do end up skipping past a lot of enemies. I feel like collision damage is the biggest point against this game. As a trope, it’s pretty tired. Mario landing on a spike shell should hurt, a big guy in armor walking into a floating bit of magical cloth should not and the game really doesn’t do a great job of distinguishing for the player that you’re taking damage, I’ll often glance up and realize I’m almost dead. The combat is very by the numbers and can be a lot of waiting for your turn to attack until you get your sword/abilities leveled up so you can take enemies down quickly enough for it not to be boring. It’s not a particularly difficult game, it’s just very punishing when you make mistakes. While the bosses are very cool looking, they feel pretty easy. One attempt to learn their moves, and a win in the second (if not first) attempt. There’s only one boss about halfway through the game I struggled with and the consensus online seems to be that it is the hardest one in the game. And even that one went down on the first try after I recognized where a safe spot to dodge was. What music is there is nice but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of variety to the soundtrack.

I’d say it’s definitely worth playing for the visual experience, but if you’re not chomping at the bit to try it out, you won’t be missing out by putting it on your waitlist. It tries very hard to be a soulstroidvania, misses the mark slightly, and doesn’t go far to set itself apart from the rest except visually.

Hotel lottery is as it was last year - pre-reg people are given a link to be put into a waiting room until 7pm EST, then everyone waiting in the queue gets randomly given a number in line. You could have been the first one in the waiting room, but been dropped in slot #1405 in the line to grab a hotel room. This was the only way they could be "fair" to everyone. As far as I know, the entire harbor sold out of hotel rooms under the MAG block in the first half an hour hotel reg opened up, same as last year.

This is likely going to be the first Super MAG I miss since I started with MAG 10. It's very disheartening, but between hotel room chaos and the fact it's gotten too big for me to enjoy anything other than room hangouts, it's not worth the hassle. I'd be open to off-site Shizz gathering and maybe Ubering in if there's any music I really want to catch, but that's about it. =/

It’s still a clusterfuck though. I just talked to someone who was like #500 in the queue and still couldn’t get one of the 1500 rooms at the Gaylord itself.

can’t get a room without a badge, but can’t get a refund on a badge if you still can’t get a room

We actually had a conversation this weekend about editing some posts where a few of us had used or quoted someone’s real name when they didn’t want to to be posted

I’m shocked and saddened by this. This is all news to me. I’ve always thought of you as a really kind and genuine person. Your name actually came up at MAGWest this weekend and the first thing out of my mouth was “Nario is the sweetest boy” there have been times when I genuinely thought to myself that I wish I was as nice as Nario. Clearly you’ve been through a lot both physically and emotionally and I would echo what others have said about seeking out a therapist to help you sort out everything you’ve been through. I know what it’s like to be manipulated by the person you love most in the world and it can be absolutely crippling. For what it’s worth it seems like there are many people here, myself included, who still care about you and want you to be ok

There is absolutely no room for MAG to grow at this hotel. I’ll be stunned if they come back next year to the same spot. I heard a lot of praise for mag itself and almost nothing but complaints about the hotel

Incoming +/- list

+ VGM name that tune with DJ Gabriel
+ We found Mag Underground
+ Zyko urination song and My Dick listening party
+ Stemage set
+ No, you’re my son
+ Sports bar!

- Sports bar
- Hotel

I ended up with a pretty short list this year. Not because I didn’t enjoy myself but because I realized at some point that the entire weekend was more of a single long chill hangout with everyone. I feel like I got to spend time with almost everyone the whole time and stopped taking highlights notes.

Sean was always there. The presence of his absence never left my mind. Conversations, memories, and tears were shared. I know I’m still grieving but I was able to keep him present in my thoughts and enjoy the company of so many friends. I hope I didn’t cause the weight of that to bring anyone down this weekend.

I feel very fortunate that so many people chose my room as a shizz hangout central. I carried this feeling of appreciation all weekend that I didn’t have to go hunt down my friends, people just kept showing up in various group configurations and I enjoyed all the time I spent with everyone. You are all such fantastic people. Thank you for making me a part of your experience.

Oh and I’m gonna call out Bimmy since I know he’s self conscious about it. You are an awesome storyteller, do not shut the fuck up. Sean never shut up and I’m happy to have so many memories of him telling stories and going off on long winded rants and raves about everything he cared about.

For the last several years, every time I’m at some shizz or mag or vgm related event I try to get to know some shizzies better, beyond the “hey you’re a fellow shizzie, we’re friends!” sort of thing. This time I had the very great pleasure of spending quite a lot of time with Darmock and Katamari. You are both two of my new favorite people and I couldn’t be happier that I got to be a part of your trips out to the west coast.
