Okay, here's the deal. Every year Stone Brewery in San Diego puts out a vertical epic on 02/02/02, 03/03/03, 04/04/04. and so on and so forth. We bought some 2004 last year and socked it away for this beer battle with the 2005, just purchased, tonight!

First, we must compare bottles. Not much difference.

So, let's compare beer color... 04 on the left, 05 on the right.

Next, let's smell. The 04 is kind of funky. The story on the side of the bottle says it has lime leaves in it, like what's found in Indian curry recipes.

The 05 smells very very very similar, but less of that limey, funkyness.

Based on smell and story content, the 05 is the clear winner!*


*The 05 is a much better beer all around. It's got smokyness, maltyness, hop content, everything you need for a good belgian/porter cross breed. PS - Both beers are 8.5% alcohol, so despite the $5.99 price tage for each bomber or 05, they're worth it. PPS - we bought a second bottle for next years battle. Be on the lookout around June 6th, 2006!!!

I had one of those a couple of weeks ago and it was delicious. It had the added bonus of getting me pretty on my way to drunkeness, which is no small feat for a single bottle of brew. I think it may have been 03 but I'm not sure.
