ok so today i went to take my guitar in to a guy named beck in tempe who has worked on my guitars before and usually did a great job. so i go in there with my new axe to get a whole bunch of hardware replaced on it. i told him that i would like to see the gibson hardware i was buying from him to make sure that it would look good and be sturdy etc. he replied by telling me that he would need to "see my wallet first." he was not joking. i told him that i didn't bring it because i'd never paid upfront before. and he said "well i'm not going to waste my fucking time getting out the hardware then. do you know who i am? i'm beck. i've sold guitars too metallica and big rockstars so don't waste my fucking time with this cheesy korean shit." that is REALLY what he said. so i calmly said, "i'm sorry sir, i won't waste anymore time with my good business and i'll just get out of your face." i went home and wrote to him saying how disappointed i was and how much of a total prick he was. and this is what he wrote back...

"Tom you ultra talented master guitarist, You better get aq better band, so you can afford a real guitar instead of that piece of shit korean crap. Ive worked with alot of talent and your not one of them as you can tell a real player by the guitar he has, and your $100 bargain is just a cheezy nightmare. God bless you for never coming into my store you looser prick, have a nice wet dream about success, cause thats all your goan have, wet dreams"

needless to say, this is hilarious. ALSO, i wouldn't recommend going in to this guy any longer...unless you like to get in fights.

yeah, several folks on this board have had bad experiences with this guy. mixed opinions about the quality of work he does and general agreement that the guy's a prick. I only went into his shop once, and wasn't treated well and got some bad advice -- so I've never returned. If I can remember the thread about beck's previous exploits, I'll post it. spend your dollars someplace else....

Well, sounds like he's entertaining at least. But there's a ton of good luthiers around here whose dad loved them. The guy I use makes me feel bad about the shape of my guitars, but usually touches up stuff without even being asked, I guess because he cares about the instruments the way I care about kittens. In that quality-price-speed equation, he just lacks the speed part sometimes. Better than getting kicked out of Beck's shop for being brown.

I would assume that he worked on Jason Newsted's basses when he was in Flotsam and Jetsam and now he can mention Metallica by default.
He set up a bass for me several years back but it really wasn't worth the trouble/$, I spent less $ and was happier with the job that Jim at Musician's Discount did.
ROP basically had to sell a kidney to have a guitar refretted by Beck, and if I remember the story correctly, it wasn't that great of a job and pretty sloppy glue-wise. I'm pretty sure he did the work when Marty updated the p-ups in his Gibson too.

I have heard a lot of mixed reviews over the years(I'm sure the Lipferts can share a story or two as well). It used to be some kind of local "right of passage" to have him work on your stuff. I do know that he has turned people with Jap/Mex Fender products away in the past. The comments regarding a Korean instrument do not surprise me.

A couple years ago he let everyone who hates him know that he keeps a gun in his shop by "accidently" discharging it in his store. It went through the wall and hit a woman in the shop next door. She lived, luckily. True story.

ahaha...the next time im in az, im going to take my steinberger to him and just have him restring it for me so i can see if he will call it a 'piece of korean crap'. that way i can say my guitar is a redneck guitar, and that he should probably like it. he'd probably say its a 'cheesy nightmare' though.

i'll act like im 12 and know nothing about what it even is.
