Do you remember rock 'n roll radio?

For reals, though, anyone old enough and from AZ who remembers this station?

Monday Morning Music Meeting?

Jonathan L? Alison Strong? Larry Mac? And so on?

They sent me to my first concert - Bad Religion, Guttermouth, and SNFU at Mesa Ampitheater. I was 15 at the time. I turn 30 tomorrow.

Damn. Where did all them years go?

Thanks for letting me share, Shizz.

KUKQ was a legend before I moved to phoenix, I had only heard of the station, but heard how some of the DJ's went on to other radio stations like the edge (back when it had two spots on the dial), kupd, and the zone.

All the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

shiiiit. I used to call into the monday morning music meeting. That was such a great idea for them to do that on the air, except for the fact that the folks at Eastside used to fuck with them real bad since it was live. That was some funny ass shit. They played my old band a couple times on the air, too. They were pretty good about letting local music on there. They even played our record even though it was only on vinyl.

I think most folks have a cool older sibling or cousin or whatever that puts them on to cool things.

My cool person was Ronnie, my cousin, and she definitely put me onto KUKQ.

I never got super into KUKQ (between the Power 92 / Y95 / KZZP battle going on, and since Q was on AM), but I definitely dug what I heard when I got a chance.

I went to the original Q Fest waaaaaaaaaaay back when.

It was a precursor to Lollapalooza and the whole music festival trend. It was even featured on the MTV video games.

That station was a hugely important factor in molding my musical tastes, for better or worse.

RIP KUKQ.

I think I learned the term "alternative" music from KQ...I remember I won tickets to Material Issue ,but my mom wouldn't take me to the show. I remember when it went off the air...sniff

In the '70s and '80s we had portable radios and cars that were AM-only. I probably listened to that station through five format changes.

We had a station like that when I was growing up that came out of Pittsburgh. If the weather was right, and your antennae was JUST SO, you could get the station to play on your BOOMBOX in my hometown. WXXP. or double x as it was known. it was a great station.

EDIT: weird. I just searched the call sign and found this old article.

KUKQ, good stuff & very limited commercial breaks.

I went to high school with a girl who's dad owned "The KEY" which was a shortlived "alternative/college rock" station on FM in the late 80's (man, am I old). Jonathan L and a few of the other KQ dj's spent some time on there too. That was a pretty cool station. I heard Jonathan L has a weekly(?) show on KUPD but I haven't checked into it.

Thank goodness for internet and satellite radio - I can't listen to anything but NPR locally.
