I've only lived in Arizona once before, but that was all the way down in buttfuck Yuma, and for only a month or so.

in mesa - the mesa arts center is cool - and they have good live music occasionally.
there are a lot of cool shows at the Yucca Tap Room in Tempe (for free) and tempe has cool shit like Ash Ave comics, Eastside Records, etc.
downtown phx has a cool arts community, with venues like The Trunk Space, The Lost Leaf, The Rhythm Room, etc. and fun dive bars like the bikini lounge. There's tons of good restaurants in the valley. if you like the outdoors there's lots of places for great hiking in the city (papago, south mountain, dreamy draw). lots of good thrift stores and antique/vintage stores.
Always good events going on around town (stand up comedy shows, film screenings, group bike rides, open mic poetry nights, etc). This weekend is Grand Ave. Fest with lots of bands and vendors.
i like these phx bands:
fatigo
snow songs
colorstore
haunted cologne
man about a dog
sweetbleeders
lonna kelly
yellow minute
treasure mammal
andrew jackson jihad
michelle blades
tremulants
the necronauts
vanessa atalanta
antique scream (never mind the name)
cagematch
sonorous
DJentrification
runaway diamonds
oh man there are so many more i cant even think of right now! And even more i haven't seen live yet that have good reputations.
if you're here in Oct. you should check out Shizzfest II, a ton of good local bands will be playing this festival.
if you like hip hop The Blunt Club is an awesome local hip hop music night with live art and performances.
first fridays is huge local artwalk in downtown phx. if you don't like big crowds skip it and do the same artwalk on every third friday - all the same galleries are open and there's way less people.
its not that far of a drive (or flight) to San Diego, L.A., Mexico, the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Flagstaff, Tucson, Bisbee, Jerome, Prescott, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Denver.

Definitely interested in some bars, as I can be known to be quite a drinker.

I don't know who's booking metal bands right now, Cypress Loung on Van Buren was for a bit, but I don't think they're doing anything these days.

There's an AZ Hardcore forum . . . somewhere, they might put you in the right direction for metal type stuff--depending on how you define your metal.

does jugheads do metal? i know they have a lot of hardcore shows there.

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

By metal I do not mean metalcore or hardcore. I am not expecting anything like some good local thrash (probably doesn't exist anywhere anymore), but maybe some melo-death (yeah I know, I'd have to move to Europe for that...)
you just might like cagematch then
or antique scream
i am sadly not very in the know with any metal music in phx. it's lame of me
