Roman Polanski is a Rapist

The guy is a famous and award winning film director but in 1977 he was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl during a modeling shoot after plying her with champagne and a Quaalude pill. He was initially indicted on six felony counts, including rape by use of drugs, child molesting and sodomy.
He was sentenced to 90 days in prison for psychiatric evaluation but was released after only 42 days. The judge was going to send him back to finish his sentence but he fled the U.S. the day he was to be sentenced (in 1978) and has been living in France ever since (He is a French citizen and France does not extradite its citizens)
He recently traveled to Zurich for a film festival where Swiss authorities arrested him and started the process of extraditing him to the U.S. His lawyers appealed in Swiss courts to prevent this but a Swiss court denied their appeal.
He could potentially serve a maximum of two years in a U.S. prison.
Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and other prominent members of Hollywood have written letters to U.S. and Swiss courts pleading Polanski's case.
But to me, rape is rape, especially raping a child?
Fuck that shit.
He drugged and raped and sodomized a 13 year old girl. And he fucking didn't serve his time for the crime he committed. He's a fucking doucheface who should go to jail.

Rape aside, he fled the US court system which is a felony.
If I raped a 13 year old girl, my colleagues and co-workers wouldn't be defending me by saying "Oh but he's such a talented web programmer!"

With the thread title and initial post content, I can't possibly see how this will result in a good old fashioned healthy debate.

yeah sorry...i guess the facts don't really leave room for debate.
i guess you could say "he won an oscar for The Pianist"
to which i would say "that was a great movie. But he raped a 13 year old girl"

im kinda really sad that such prominent people are signing a petition to encourage the U.S. and Swiss authorities to ignore this crime and its sentence just because the guy is a good filmmaker.

I mean, how many of us have met someone famous or an idol or something and been let down when they weren't really all that nice or open to talking to you or whatever? At first it's really disappointing because it is like, here is this person I admire so much and they let down the image I have of them. But the image is not them. The image is a reflection of their work. You gotta learn how to separate the person and the artist.
I think Polanski is a scumbag of a person, but that doesn't mean I can't respect his art.

no need to go much further than that, the facts make this pretty cut and dry.
