When I was like 5 my dad wore a pair of pants that were too tight and somehow I saw him take off his pants and saw a red ring around his stomach. I asked my mom about it and my mom said he was bitten in half by a shark in the Navy and that's where they stitched him back up

Haha, my dad's a fatty and he wore pants that were too small, leaving a ring around his stomach. My mom lied to me because kids are dumb and believe everything

Not that I was a booger eater or anything but my parents always said if you eat boogers they turn into worms in your stomach. I think that was enough reason not to. They also said not to cross your eyes because they would stay that way. Another one, never use crutches or a wheelchair if you're not injured because your wishing injury onto yourself. Man, there were a ton of things they told my sister and I that didn't turn out to be factual.

On top of that, being Navajo/Omaha/Cherokee, I grew up with a number of cultural taboos that I was supposed to adhere to. Some were teachings that instilled certain cultural understandings according to traditional knowledge. Others were just weird.

A few not so serious ones:

Never whistle at night because your calling the bad spirits to you.
Never enter a house through a window or any other opening than a door because that's the way evil people do things.
Never leave your hair around because bad people will take it and witch (i.e. curse) you.
Snakes are bad in Navajo culture, so I was never allowed to do anything with snakes.
Coyotes crossing your path are bad omens.

There's a ton of them. I can't say it's all bullshit but some are peculiar to say the least.

hmmm. i think i have my kid's best interests in mind, yet i'm sure someday he'll call bullshit. ah, if only i knew where to draw the line.

in the meantime, i'm going to think of different ways i can force him to grow up to be just. like. me.

Emperors of Japan

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.
