"AZPunk is ovah!"

Without the attached message board and the obvious swing in musical tastes as of late, you may be right, or at least right in its former hyped fashion. I really like the new board and its a fantastic site for information but since its missing the human element and all that comes with it (good and bad) its harder to blow up an event like this (ie: slander, shit talk, etc).

i know this is gonna sound meaner than i intend, but whatever im sure thats a first:

AZPUNK is over. it has been over for a couple years now. a lot of folks have moved, moved on, gotten involved in other scenes, some still go to shows in various capacities, 'sold out', given up,moved on to scenes they once were disassociated from, etc etc etc

a lot of the old people just got old

a lot of the young kids just didnt stick around

and everyone else in-between those two labels moved, uh in-between both outcomes.

these things are a natural part of music scenes turnover in a cyclical fashion.

its cool that you still do the site for a news board and what not, but the reality is that its not EVER going to be how it was. and this THRASH OF THE TITANS thing...i mean, it doesnt seem like anybody is into this. maybe im totally wrong here, but if theres that little interest its probably time to retool things and move forward. i dont think you should give up just because time has moved on, but i think its time to look at what can be done to foster whats happening now rather than try to re live stuff.

*im being sincere. im not just 'internet shit talking' you, so i hope you dont take it as some random dick bein a jerk.

**or you can. thats ok too.

Joe in all honesty, I completely hear ya man - and I don't take it personally at all, bud.

The old AZPunk, or at least the community aspect that we attempted, is definitely gone. That actually seemed to die off about a year/year and a half before we took the site down in May of 08. In fact, bringing it back completely rebuilt, and without a message board WAS our rethinking of the whole thing. Chris and I wanted to create a more community driven information based website, completely divorced from the whole dominating message board thing. Along with that busted old ass website, we killed the AZPunk comp cds, and created the Personality Disorder 12" record, which features 14 awesome current bands like Lenguas Largas, Said Gun and Cagematch. Tossed away the old logo - completely tossed the old website, and built something new from the ground up. We removed the message board, and put more focus on making a kick ass calendar (which we totally have now). We got rid of the boring featured band "interviews", and created the pub crawl podcast (which I think both Mikey Wretch and Said Gun had a fun time doing). We completely tore down everything that was AZPunk, and rebirthed an entirely new system. In all honesty, the Titans thing is really the only thing that we kept around, mainly because the first one was so rad (whether you were there or not) and we had the show right before we took the site offline. To me, the Titans idea was worth trying out at least one more time. Despite the obvious lack of interest within the message board scene, based on the feedback i've received, Titans 2 is panning out to be cooler than the first (but ofcourse, you could call me biased on that point). The thing that's funny to me is that AZPunk DID move on. Moved on almost 3 years ago. But based on your logic, and at least from my point of view, its everyone else that's still clining to this archaic idea of the old azpunk brand. It seems to me like people are associating the old brand "AZPunk.com" to the old website, when in reality those days have been gone for a long time. Everyone knows that. Please don't mistake for a moment that Chris or I are trying to cling on to the "old days". If that were true, we would have kept the old site up, and to me, that would be the most pathetic thing possible for AZPunk. Technologically speaking, that site was a pile of shit. People keep wanting us to make a message board again, but to us, that's just going back to the old idea - something that we've made pretty clear we don't want to do. Hell, on that point, I'm glad AZPunk isn't as popular as it was. Managing that old message board was a full time job. Personally, I'm much more content with the site operating as a concert calendar and information hub, rather than the shit-talking mecca it became in the year before we took the site offline. Our interest, since we relaunched about a year and a half ago, is being a place where people can find and post information on bands, shows, venues, etc. That's it! The end! So in short, and again this is only my opinion, we're not the ones who haven't been able to move on. But whether or not people think that "AZPunk.com is ovah!", that really doesn't matter to Chris and I. Whether we're creating compilation records with other local friends like DJJV or Nate Dizzy, organizing an event that brings musicians who most likely would have never met each other together to create something new - all in the name of having a good time with friends at a show, or we're sitting with a local band at a dive bar - clicking the record button - and seeing where the alcohol takes the conversation, the point of all of this is that we are having fun, and most likely we will continue to keep doing these things that are fun to us for a long time. The site still gets alot of traffic, and people outside of the message board scene do visit the site for information. Ideally, we would love it if people would take part by signing up and posting shows, or wanting to write articles about local music related stuff, but if not, no biggie.

that's my way of saying i've noticed dropoff on nearly every message board i used to visit once friendster, myspace, facebook, etc.. took off. people seem to be less willing to hit up a topic/genre/industry/etc specific site when they can simply hit one site and see what all their "friends" are doing. the "what are you doing this weekend?" threads on some boards used to get lots of attention. now people just say something on facebook and wait for comments.
