Hmmm.

That last comment has me thinking about the MCSO investigation, and how if Goddard was elected it would just get Arpaio.

But since Brewer is now an elected official (shudder), then possibly her link to that corruption will be put into play.

I mean it's not like we didn't expect another stupidface to get elected here with our state's track record?

I would've hoped otherwise but here we are.

And in a masochistic way I kinda like the idea of the SB 1070 debacle playing out in front of national audiences with
those responsible having to step out of office, and possibly into jail. Sweet!

Again with our track record: We elect bum officials, we impeach bum officials.

Edit: In response to Skeksis comment about Rubio: No such thing as a Latino Republican. Their Brown card is rejected as soon as they do that shit. Sort of like how some people say Will Smith is a non threatening black man, a brown republican is like a race trader. Might as well go to David Duke's Thanksgiving bash!

hmm i see what you are doing here and i agree with it but damn, how low do we have to go to get these repubes out of state office?

Not sure that'll ever happen, but if I had to guess, I'd say AZ will trend a bit more purple in 2012. At least regarding statewide offices. BUT with redistricting being entirely managed by the GOP, it'll probably be a very long time before we get to see any substantial purple/blue shift in the state legislature or congressional seats.

The GOP is much better at long term political strategy... if you project the past trends into the future, we'll probably see a GOP president in 2016, who will lose congress in 2018, but probably get re-elected AND gain seats in 2020: which will mean another (3rd) decade of GOP controlled redistricting.... and so on. They'll be very well situated for a very-long-term majority at that point. Ugh. :-)

totally. my father in law - a generally rational man - truly believes that obama is a muslim terrorist.

he's also had his knee and hip replaced courtesy of a phenomenally good union healthcare plan (along with a nice pension), which would basically vaporize if the republicans had their way. yet he's STILL afraid of obama and thinks that national healthcare is a step closer to us being nazi germany.

i guess i take back my "generally rational man" statement.

I agree that we need to look a little further into the future instead of freaking out too much. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was devastated when Dubya get reelected, but if he lost that election, do you really think we would have gotten Obama? With these midterm results, we have a much better chance of getting another Democratic prez in 2012, rather than basically guaranteeing the worst Repube possible.

BUT locally, the only positive I see is that managing the AZ govt over the next few years is going to be an ugly, ugly affair. And whatever happens, it's 100% the fault of Republicans. Whether they can smokescreen it enough with blaming brown people, I don't know (people are pretty effing dumb), but their inability to govern should ensure a fairly quick shift of blame back their direction.

Goddard didn't really want the job that bad, else he would have tried harder :-) let Brewer & co. go down spectacularly (per Bush) and try to frame yourself as a viable alternative (per Obama).

The thing you* don't get--and the thing reasonable or left leaning people (not always the same thing) don't get, is that THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN AZ ACTUALLY DO LIKE THIS TREND AND THINK IT'S GOOD. YOU* ARE NOT THE UNHEARD MAJORITY, YOU* ARE THE MINORITY HERE.

If Goddard didn't want the job, he should've re-run for AG, and it could've been a MUCH stronger ref' on pro/con SB1070.
But he still would have lost 1) he's a weak campaigner, 2) see above.

Today's morning was a sad one for must of us... Arizona will have the leaders they deserve, if you didn't vote then don't complain, just sit, and enjoy the ride down to hell.

this is what is going to piss me off. I know people who didn't vote and I know they are going to be complaining about the election.

I will kindly let them know people complaining about what's going is reserved for those who actually did something about it, like voting!

How many weak/worthless "protests votes" do I have to make "to send a message" that count for exactly nothing.
like I said in another thread, it's like choosing if you want to be shot in the head or beat to death.

Yes, there are people who're just too lazy to care to vote. Fine, fuck them.
But a damn mighty more of them--I believe--just can't bring themselves to participate in such a worthless system anymore.

He pretty much just announced his candidacy

One difference between this year and 1994 is that if Clinton was able to point the finger at the Republican congress when things couldn't get done. With a split congress that blame would fall on Senate Democrats as well.

The Tea Party deserves the credit for handing Obama a second term though. Had they allowed the "establishment" candidates to win primaries in Nevada, Colorado, and Delaware Republicans would have taken all 3 seats and had the bragging right for taking out 2 democratic leaders in a row. The favorite right now for the 12 nomination is Romney (Reps almost always nominate their runner up from he last go around) but despite running for President as a conservative he had a pretty moderate record as governor. He is the only candidate I can see giving Obama a tight race but there is no chance in hell the Tea Party would allow a candidate who essentially signed a local version of "Obamacare" in their state to win the nomination. My guess (which will probably change over the next year) is that the real fight will be between Pence, Palin, and Rick Santorum(expect him to open an exploratory committee in the next few weeks).

There really wasn't much else he could have done. He has been criss-crossing the entire state since last December and for the first few months of the year he led every poll. Visibility was a big problem for him but there is not a lot he could have done about when his opponent pissed off half the country, placing her on Fox News every night over the summer. Only one debate was held and although Brewer lost support for making an ass of herself Goddard didn't gain any because all people paid attention to in it was the goofy idiot. It was smart of her to avoid any more debates because the only result would have been more exposure for Goddard, which kept his support from rising.
