i feel the same way about phoenix as it sounds like you do about your town. i love this city, my friends and family are here, etc. for those reasons, i'm not even thinking about leaving. this is my home and no one can convince me otherwise. but that's easy for me since i'm working. if you have to move for a job, phoenix has a little of everything, except for heat and republicans. we have a lot of that shit.

It's nice here most days. The only extreme weather we really ever have is the heat.
Snowbirds... they only annoy me when I have to shop because they are so rude w/ their shopping carts and on the road. They drive like shit and add to how many cars are on the road.
I love the music and art scene out here.
The food, especially mexican food is amazingly good and getting better all the time
It's a red state. blah.
our sports teams aren't the greatest but they are fun and the stadiums are all super neat.
everything is so damn spread out. My thoery is that our city planners get overwhelmed by the vastness of our skies. Our sky for the most part seems to go on forever and it's usually really beautiful so it makes our builders build like that. Like they are trying to reach the end of the sky or something. So there is lots of space but you really need a vehicle to get around. Our transit is lacking and can't compete w/ how spread out we are.
Cost of living is better than other major metro cities, for the most part on the west coast.
Northern cities are awesome, especially when you need to escape the summer heat in the valley or more southern cities.
I think AZ has a lot of really good looking people. Native, or transplant. I think the constant sunshine attracts pretty people kind of like moths to a flame. haha

there more to love about AZ and to not like; I think you'd have to spend time here and discover it for yourself. I wouldn't have stayed here as long as I did if I didn't like it. (20+ years)

-theres like a secret second layer of town once you know it, where you can find something cool/local/indpendent everywhere

Beautifully put. I'll add: not a lot of phonies. I know that in really big cities like NYC and LA, there's tons of stuff to see and do, but you have to wade through a waist-deep sea of phonies to get to it. In AZ, you're safe from these people if you stay out of Scottsdale. The really cool stuff is a little harder to find, and the people who just want to be seen don't really bother with it.

...you know, I've been in Phoenix for ten years and I have yet to go to Scottsdale. I feel suddenly even less inclined to break that (win?) streak.

i honestly doubt that. thats like those people that pretend they dont know when the superbowl is :D

maybe not north scottsdale, but whatevz. i think all the outlying suburns are actually equally bad, scottsdale just somehow has a reputation. anywhere people with a lot of money congregate tends to suck. scottsdale, chandler, surprise, avondale etc etc

yes they all have good parts too, but they all kind of suck

I didn't read the replys you got, but I'm sure they're full of good reasons to move and to not move.

But, I'll add this: you can't UNdo something you DON'T do.

Chandler and places like that are just full of corporate shopping centers and cookie-cutter houses, not much else, as a place for dullards with money to feel secure. Scottsdale is for the rich people who read lifestyle magazines and think they have "taste."

The weather in Florida sucks! Every year there is the total possibility that your state could get completely raped by hurricanes.

The Phoenix area is one of the few areas in the country that is almost completely free from risk of most natural disasters. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but that's something I look at in choosing a place (funny, considering I currently live in the heart of earthquake country)

As a computer guy, I didn't realize this until I was visiting a Datacenter that had a map of natural disaster hotspots, Arizona was totally green.

Everywhere else, has hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, or something else. We just have dry heat.

What I like about it here is the lack of mosquitos and other bugs, especially in the summer, I mean, we do have spiders and scorpions, but I will deal with them anyday over a hoard of mosquitos.

Absolutely despise this sentiment, areas of town are what you make them. I have never been happier than living in Scottsdale for the past 5 years, great food close by (and delivery and dare I say it more open than in Downtown Phoenix), a few good bars, supermarkets, mom & pop shops, good trails parks and canals to ride / run on...oh and wait we HAVE a dog park, one of the better ones in the valley. And lemme tell ya, waist - deep - in - a - sea - of - phonies...!?!? That is easily how any given First friday / Art Walk can feel to an outsider too, I mean just instead of spot the fake "millionaire" we can play "Hipster Or Hobo".

Thanks for all the opinions dudes and dudettes. Fuck Florida pretty much. America's swampy wang.

Donald, since you are a "computer guy", what's the job market like for programmers and shit there? Here every job I find wants 5+ years of experience in PHP or Java and I don't have pro experience in either even though I'd love to do PHP. I have 3 years of .NET experience and nobody calls me back.

tyler.. you're not in the part of scottsdale that i think is being referred to.

raubhimself.. godaddy is always hiring. its entry and sales/support oriented but if you know your stuff you can get off of the sales floor fast and into something you're more qualified for. and i hear paypal is hiring in chandler. for what, i'm not sure.
