Yeah Im poking fun but in all seriousness this is horrid and some of the video is so freaky.

it reminds me of the videos from indonesia in 04. you're watching someone hold on to a tree or something and then all of the sudden they slip and they're gone. just gone. you just watched someone die. crappy.

Huffpo has an article on the orgs helping japan right now

there's also this from the shows forum (it's not spam)

Thought I'd share if anyone is interested in extending a helping hand.

///////

Hi everyone!
I wanted to forward you a message from Shinji Masuko of DMBQ/Boredoms who currently resides in Osaka, Japan. We are trying to help them raise money to help those in need in Japan after the recent tragic earthquake. See below. There have started a paypal account where you can donate funds to help those in need of aide. Please paypal dmbq@dmbq.net

Shinji's message below:

Its Shinji from DMBQ/Boredoms here. I am writing to my friends who is living in US and other countries. As you know, Japan's most powerful earthquake since records began has struck the north-east coast, triggering a massive tsunami. Fortunately I am OK because I am living in Osaka, but now the damage situation is gradually clarified. So many our friends, friend's of friend, friend's family, musicians, people who work in music venue, etc... a lot of people who we know were struck. And communications are almost 100% down in northeast Japan still. Friends who were staying in northern Japan to have a show etc,, can not come back to their home and now they are in the refuge where the acquaintance doesn't exist.

Plus, Tokyo's electricity will be cut off gradually from tomorrow. Even railway will be 50% running and now gasoline is almost empty in Tokyo, means Tokyo's economy will be down. The food scarcity has already started because the factory cannot operate. Please help them. Volunteer's acceptance has not been begun yet. We want to send relief and condolence donation directly to people and north-east Japan's music scene in future. Please Cc-ing this email to your artist friends too.

Please send donations via paypal: dmbq@dmbq.net

SEATTLE >> A Seattle oceanographer says some debris from Japan's tsunami and earthquake may wash up on the West Coast in about one to three years, before currents carry it towards Hawaii.

Curt Ebbesmeyer says how fast the flotsam arrives depends on the material. A derelict vessel could take 12 months, while a rubber ducky may take two to three years.

He says the floating debris will likely flow in a big circle, carried by currents from Japan to Washington, Oregon and British Columbia before turning toward Hawaii and back toward Asia.

Most of the debris will be plastic items. Heavier items like cars will sink.

Ebbesmeyer and another scientist have been mapping the path of ocean debris for years and he wrote a book about the research.

man.. ya think about all of the antiques and lost family heirlooms that were lost in this disaster. stuff buried in garbage/debris, swallowed by mud, or swept out to sea.. all of that stuff is gone. i wonder if we might hear a story about how a small family heirloom was found on a beach in southern oregon and was later reunited with the original owner in japan. i mean, most antiques and heirlooms aren't plastic but i'm sure we'll hear something similar to this. which will be tragically cool.

seems they just got hit with another one. this time 7.1. much less intense than the huge one of course but this came with another tsunami warning. apparently there hasn't been much damage reported but i can just imagine the psychological toll it must be taking.. you think that maybe, finally you can start putting pieces of your life back together and then more shit just keeps coming down the pike. lame.

i'd be curious to see how japan handles this and allocates resources in the coming months/years. people in new orleans are still living in trailers and katrina was like 6 years ago. will the way they get through this make our response to katrina look that much more pathetic? or the opposite. i have no idea.

Emperors of Japan
Myspace

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

The thing about Katrina is that the most badly flooded places were the poorest places. In flood prone areas, land value of low places is always lower and that's where poor people live. So the people who were displaced naturally had limited resources to bounce back. In Japan the Earthquake devastates more broadly and the tsunami hits coastlines which are typically higher value properties. I'm just saying it's at least a little bit apples and oranges.
