It was the deadliest single twister in the U.S. in nearly 60 years and the second major tornado disaster in less than a month.
they are just getting pummeled in the midwest/tornado alley. i grew up in central illinois and tornadoes are nothing to mess with. scary horrible shit.
how to help
the photos coming out of this are insane. the destroyed helicopter in the parking lot? omg

so far tornadoes have killed more than 500 people this year and we're mid-tornado season right now too
But year-to-date, tornadoes have killed more than 500 people. That's seven times the average, making this the deadliest tornado season in more than half a century.

yeah we had a tornado shelter thingy in our basement growing up. as a kid i used to have nightmares of tornadoes coming and destroying our house.
i can remember when i was around 8 or 9, there was a tornado warning in phoenix. i was at a babysitter's house and we were all figuring out which closets and bathrooms everyone was going to have to hide in (no, this is not a setup for a "babysitter touched me in the closet" joke). i'm pretty sure that's the only tornado warning i can remember in the valley.

Goddamn...when you see a picture of destruction like that with nothing to compare it to, you don't get the same perspective...but actually seeing what was there and what it looks like now...fuck.
Before and after I found on the Mother Jones tumblr...Crazy...
I can't even imagine living in a place where tornadoes like that are possible. I've heard people say the same to me about living in earthquake country, but it's rare to even feel a small earthquake, and the big ones are usually spaced out by 20 years or so and still cause nowhere near as much destruction as these twisters that basically cancel entire towns.
