When I was in Chicago for the Pitchfork festival, the weirdest thing happened. I was wearing a MotA shirt, and, I shit you not, I received about 10 compliements on the shirt, to include festival staff. I thought band shirts weren't cool anymore. Shows what I know.

Melvins ~ Nude With Boots
Second album of Buzz with the Big Business dudes. Truth be told, production hampers the whole fucking thing. I hear the music, I do not feel it. It rocks, but it does not seriously rock. Needs more bass. I'd still see them if they swung by Phoenix though. Something tells me the live show would be better.

Harvey Milk ~ Life... The Best Game in Town
One word: HOLY SHIT. The Melvins, previously notorious for aggravating dirges of guitar sludge, have completely been dethroned. No coincidence that Joe Preston, former Melvin, is in this band, but Jesus Christ holy fuck, this album is the perfect blend of noise, sludge, anger, and beauty. Seriously. Fucking good. Gets the "best of drunken purchase" medal. First song alone should sell those interested.

Xiu Xiu ~ Women as Lovers
You know, I have always loved ths band. Their style melds so many unlikely genres, and adresses such controversial topics, that they aren't really under the radar, they're pretty much outside the radar. This album is probably their most accessible, though that doesn't make it easy to listen to. I feel the need to point out that they cover "Under Pressure", with Michael Gira singing Bowie's parts. It's really fucking cool. And if you were ever wondering, it's pronounced "shoe shoe".

The Bug ~ London Zoo
Lately, I've been enjoying the proverbial "ass kicking bass" whilst driving (thank you, Spank Rock and Busdriver). I was drawn to it because it's on Ninja Tune, but as it turns out, it's some really aggro, garagey dubstep. Not typical to the label, not typical to my tastes, but fuck, it's good. Play loud, while driving.

Their previous albums seemed more about representing beauty, or expressing anger. This album, if I had to define it in one word, would be "festive". Sounds completely lame at first, but it's really good. These Icelandic fuckers are playing at the Marquee in September. Based on the scene, I'm amazed we're getting such an amazing international show. It's seriously worth your while to check them out, and no, I have nothing to do with the promoters.


I got some other shit, too, but these stood out. Seriously, all are great records in their own right.

EDIT: Oh yeah, TV on the Radio is streaming their new single at the http://www.tvontheradio.com/ splash page. It's fucking incredible, but I'm biased, cuz I fucking love that band.
