#1014314 Anyone like reviewing music

Posted by illya on 23 February 2011 - 11:11 AM

From time to time, I have bands come through town and occasionally send me their music to review or even ask if I would like to interview them prior to a show in phoenix or surrounding areas.

As much as I would love to do this, I don't feel that I would do anyone justice by doing any kind of review whether I like the music or not so I was wondering if there was any aspiring journalist/critic who is musically inclined and would like to review music for theshizz.

I can't promise anything monetarily, but it can often times get you into a show for free and you get some free music sent to ya.

Out of town bands are not that often, but I feel if we started reviewing shows, and having more of a journalistic online presence it would build on itself.

If anyone is interested let me know, there is a band from quebec who is coming into town in a few weeks and I don't feel I have the time to review it, even though I really like the music (really poppy, reminds me of the Ruby Lee, and 70's pop ala Wings/ELO/Lennon)

email donald at theshizz.org if your interested :)

there's a local music blog, Yabyum music, that is always looking for writers and support, they publish monthly online and they might be down for a collab.

#918175 Sound Strike

Zack de la Rocha's Sound Strike - Artists officially boycotting Arizona to protest against SB1070

Here's a list of the courageous artists who have taken a stand for civil and human rights in this collective decision to boycott Arizona:

Cypress Hill
Juanes
Conor Oberst
Los Tigres del Norte
Rage Against the Machine
Cafe Tacvba
Micheal Moore
Kanye West
Calle 13
Joe Satriani
Serj Tankian
Rise Against
Ozomatli
Sabertooth Tiger
Massive Attack
One Day as a Lion
Street Sweeper Social Club
Spank Rock
Sonic Youth
Tenacious D

If touring bands want to commit to this, then do it. Don't be a hypocrite. If your perception is that the government is failing the people, start boycotting Mississippi and Louisiana for not doing more to prevent oil rigs from destroying an ocean. If your perception is that SB 1070 is thinly veiled racism then you must also gear up for a boycott of France. If your perception is that SB 1070 is total cultural oppression, stop touring in China. If you think that it's all-out cultural war, stop touring in Serbia, who continues to harbor war criminals who have slaughtered thousands.

stop touring in France once the ban on hijabs has taken effect (http://www.vancouver...0709/story.html) to continue your quest against thinly veiled racism (no pun intended)

stop touring in China (i don't think i need to explain this one)
-Bands on the boycott list that have toured in china: Sonic Youth, Ozomatli, Tenacious D, Kanye West, Joe Satriani...

stop touring in Serbia- http://www.rferl.org...le/1064245.html
-Bands on the boycott list that have toured in serbia: sonic youth, joe satriani, probably more i got tired of googling them all..

perhaps some of this is slightly hyperbolic, but if you're going to take a stand and want to be taken seriously, you have to be consistent. otherwise, piss off.

#889340 if you think the sales tax increase is bad...

Posted by illya on 15 April 2010 - 12:03 AM

yes. please vote yes on prop 100 in may.

here is the case, pure and simple:
Arizona's revenues are expected to be quite low this year and next, and as a result, major popular services have been either reduced or eliminated completely. As you can see in the contingency budget, i.e. what will happen if the sales tax is not passed, there are several major reductions to AHCCCS, DES, DHS, and Education. Specifically, Education is set to take a $428 million reduction if prop 100 is not passed, which would be 15-20% of their budget.

http://www.azleg.gov...lls/sb1001s.htm
(section 149)

Maybe you do not agree that a sales tax increase is good tax policy. Fair enough, it's pretty regressive and unfairly burdens the poor. That is not currently a valid argument against voting for prop 100, when the alternative is so dire.

If that is your position, that you agree that you want services and believe that the state should provide a certain level of service, please write to your legislators and let them know that. The reason that legislators aren't taking a closer look at tax policy in order to maintain services is because there is no pressure for them to do otherwise. write to your state legislators, include pictures of your kids, remind them that you are unhappy that your kids will have increased class sizes and diminished health care due to their decisions and remind them that this is an election year. actually, don't just write to your legislators, write to all elected officials, and those candidates for office.

don't forget to vote in november!
