#1434332 [VIDEO] Castlevania II Simon's Quest Medley - Super Guitar Bros

Posted by SGBsteve on 27 October 2020 - 11:43 AM

It's been quite a while since I've been here but I was thinking about this place a lot when we were working on this medley - especially while playing Dwelling of Doom, for obvious reasons.

Song List:

Message of Darkness 0:00

The Silence of Daylight 0:33

"What a Horrible Night for a Curse" 1:34

Monster Dance 1:44

Dwelling of Doom 2:37

Within These Castle Walls 3:35

Last Boss 4:25

Bloody Tears 5:10

Game Over 6:28

#1389406 DoD Intro Month Results, Legacy Month Next (15th Anniversary!)

Posted by SGBsteve on 29 September 2018 - 06:45 AM

Submitted just in time... I'm looking forward to listening to everyone else's covers while I'm working.

Yep, exact opposite of Fresh. But I'd love to see some of the games that are currently sitting at than less than 3 entries get some <3. :)

Not only does the game I picked have only two covers right now. But the song I picked has gotten literally ZERO love from DoD in its 15 years. I'm actually really surprised by this but I'm happy to be the first.

Sorry I meant to get on here sooner but have been busy with crap... Anyway! It's great to be back on DoD and The Shizz and I'm glad I finally got a chance to submit something under the new name. Its great to see that people liked what I did since I'm planning to start a solo channel on Youtube called Steven Strums and this will be one of the first tracks I upload on there so I've been having small cases of self-doubt about how it would be received. So thanks for the kind comments and the voting and all that.

I think it was Czyszy in the other thread who commented on the "shaker" and asked if the other drums were recorded from the guitar... Yessir! All the drums/percussion you hear were samples I recorded from my guitar.

I think the inspiration came from the Super Guitar Bros medley of Castlevania 3 where people commented on how much they liked the scratching sounds that I was doing. It got me thinking how it would be cool to make a drum kit entirely of samples that I recorded myself. Here's an example of what they sound like in their dry state:

So yeah, that "shaker" sound is actually supposed to be like a "hi-hat" but either way, it's just a bunch of samples of me scratching the side of the guitar.

Anyway, thanks again, guys. It's good to be back. Maybe I'll submit again sometime in the near future.

Very observant! Yep, back then we didn't really have any structure to our recordings. We just sat down and played. After a while we started feeling more comfortable being on a certain side and just kept sticking with it.

Now it feels super weird if we ever switch sides. it just feels like something is wrong

Happy Halloween!!

(And the obligatory "Sorry for being MIA all the time")

We finally have a new video. And, unlike our first Castlevania video, we actually managed to upload this one ON Halloween and not the day after.

We did all kinds of punch ins when we recorded this song cuz it's hard as fuck and the video was recorded later in the process. So everything ended up being easier to do and also sounding better. Safe to say were gonna be doing it like this from now on.

Anyway, enjoy!

You guys... *blush* Thank you.

Actually, I was playing around with that part last night and figured out how to make it sound even more delayed during the 16th note parts. Prepare to be more amazed next time you hear it!

I agree with everyone who says Mag/The Shizz is what you make of it. I'll be 33 this year as well and I still look forward to rocking out and "whipping my hair back and forth" like the best of them. But I also know plenty of people who prefer to stand still and focus more on exactly what the musicians are playing. No judgement either way.

As for socializing, I still have some anxiety at times and feel like a social moron but it's gotten way better since i started coming to Mag in 2012. I always think of Magfest as a way to practice my social skills, not just with people I know but even the random person in the elevator. Especially the random person in the elevator. I've found the past couple days since being back that its easier to talk with random people and OMG I can smile too! Imagine that!

And as I've told many people, you'll rarely see Sam and I in the same place at Mag since we have such different interests. He doesn't like to drink or get high, I do. He doesn't like to rock out at metal shows, I do. Again, no judgement. Mag is totally different for everyone so there's no wrong way to do it as long as you enjoy yourself and feel better afterwards.

Edit: Welcome to Page 100!

++ Super Guitar Bros. - loved it! it was so sweet and intimate, yet y'all filled the room. I'm sorry that people tried to eat sandwiches during your performance. I think that's so fucking rude!

Oh really? I had no idea. Well I appreciate you saying that but believe me, we've had way worse than that at past shows.

Anyway thanks for the kind words

This is my first time posting in here in over a year I think. Good to be back!

I'm not good at the long, post Mag messages but I will say just a few things.

Thank you so much to Darmock, Robby and everyone who volunteered on security and sound for making Mag Underground a reality. I'm so glad we were able to rock out like we wanted to without Mag security there to break it up. I hope this is something that will be back every year.

And a special thank you to everyone who made it to our show. I know it was pretty early but hopefully it was worth losing some sleep. For me, it seriously felt like our first show on the second stage at Mag 10. We had probably like 50 something people at that show and most of them were you guys sitting on the floor right up front, as it should be.

You guys have been our #1 supporters since we started with Duet of Ninjas back in 2009 and I can't thank you enough for that.

I'm sad that its over but I'm so happy that I got to see so many of your lovely faces again. Can't wait for next year.

P.S. I'd like to start posting here more again but I'm thinking about changing my name. Aktulua is just my old AOL screen name from high school and I'd like to move on to something better now (and maybe something I can pronounce).
