Any interesting local bands here?
15 September 2012 - 03:58 PM
Hi everyone. I just moved to PHX and want to know if there are any interesting, challenging local bands I should keep an eye on. I' am always looking for variations of the 90's Chicago/Louisville post-rock genre. I' am also a fan of dream-pop/shoegaze bands like Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine and genre-less bands like Devotchka. I would like to meet other musicians as well and was told "Go to shows and you'll meet people there." I looked at the Arizona reverbnation.com chart for any upcoming shows and became frustrated seeing how many people listed themselves under the independent genre when they are clearly not.
Any chance of finding other musicians?

Hi everyone. I' am a drummer. Here's a partial ad I had on craigslist. In spite of the list of bands, I still got responses from speed-lead metal dudes. Maybe I should just stick with taking lessons.
Moving from NYC. Will be moving back to AZ. this week. I'm not interested in working with young (unless you are Annie Clark), over-privileged, Williamsburg supermodel hipster kids that puts fashion and self-destruction ahead of showing up for practice and have little or no experience playing music. If you have ever asked for a mirror while trying out an instrument at a music store...........well, you get it.
Artists that I may or may not own albums of but admire greatly: Tortoise, pg.lost, Rachel's, Devotchka, Dark Dark Dark, Cocteau Twins, Red House Painters, Blonde Redhead, Lali Puna, Edith Piaf, Klaus Nomi, Calexico, Neutral Milk Hotel, Throwing Muses, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Pinback, His Name Is Alive, Belly, Camera Obscura, Antony and the Johnsons, Coeur de Pirate, St.Vincent, Pale Saints, Stereolab, Best Coast, Portishead, Seabear, ELO, Joanna Newsom, The Smiths, Beach House, Mirah, Bill Evans Trio, M.Davis/Tony Williams, Beirut, Nouvelle Vague and the list goes on. Please don't contact if you are not familiar with these artists. I have received responses such as "I never heard of any of these bands. Anyways, I'm putting together a band and we sound like Eric Clapton/Pearl Jam/Creed/Tool/Yanni/Kenny Loggins/Lady Gaga/Nickelback and sonic diarrhea of the like. Hit me up and let me know." They'll probably contact me anyway. No "lead" singers.
My best experience was playing with people who weren't alcoholics and were COMPLETELY drug free (I believe that benchmark-setters and my ideals Annie Clark and Jeff Mangum don't live this cheesy, 80's rock-n-roll lifestyle).
Here's a project I was in when I lived in Portland,OR. a few years back: http://www.myspace.c...nodynegearheart
