The Firebirds by Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons
I guess Prince Lasha went to high school with Ornette Coleman. I am unsure as to whether Prince is a title or his birth name. Anyway, good mid-60s avant-garde jazz.

Variations on a Theme on the Katrina Hexachord by Philip Munger
Composed by an Alaskan after Katrina based on the guitar fingerings of George W. Bush. You can kind of tell which parts are about him. The Nino Rota-sounding stuff. Get the whole story and a link for free download at http://progressiveal...rricane_31.html

I would like to take away the distinction between people who are flat-out racist and people who are not [at least in public] racist but take great advantage from the fact that racism exists in this country. Since the trend these past 8 years has been to make clear cut black and white distinctions in all moral, ethical and national judgments, let's do the same for this thing here, then.

If you manipulate and benefit from the racism of others, you're a racist.

And being true to yourself isn't really valuable if you're always wrong. Cough, George W. Bush.

Who's gonna play Bob Rock? Nichols? Hissong? Vericolli?

Wouldn't the sacrifice be worth it to do the next one with Rick Rubin?

1. Let's make the argument that you are listening to someone speak, say at your church or at a rally, and that someone says something offensive or otherwise mean-spirited, even downright untrue, and you say nothing to denounce, refute or distance yourself from either the person and the comments, let's argue that because you did not do any of those things you are, effectively tolerating, legitimizing and even condoning those aforementioned statements.

Your pastor implies that the Reagan Administration pushed crack into America's ghettos, you say nothing, therefore you agree. You sit on a charity board with a former member of the Weathermen, though you do not condemn the man's prior actions in his presence, therefore you are a sympathizer. Yes, let's live there. Let's say that this is the way things are in our world.

So then you are at a political rally. And you are not just attending this political rally, you are actually hosting this rally as a way to shore up support for your campaign to become arguably the most powerful person on the planet. And at that rally someone in the crowd, some brain dead sycophantic sociopath shouts out "kill the terrorist" in reference to your opponent in the race to become the most powerful person on the planet. You do nothing, say nothing, just stand there with your dumb doe eyes and "look ma how good I did" grin on your face. You tolerate, legitimize and condone jingo/nationalistic race baiting. Fucking hypocrite.

2. A woman made an innocent comment to me regarding the relative accessibility of pornographic magazines in bookstores, referring to the fact that these can now be found on the magazine rack and not behind the cash register, where she would expect them to be. Then she says, "No wonder so many kids are gay."

She is greeted by stunned silence from myself and my coworker.

"I mean, 'cause it's just there. Maybe I'm just a prude." Then the woman walked away.

This is, apparently, the way things are in our world. To paraphrase the [hopeful] prophet Sam Cooke, change can't come fast enough.

~I realized, after the fact, that Truth For Dummies is not an appropriate title for this post, but instead Dummy For Truth. Or better yet, We're Deep In Fucking Bat Country, Run For Your Lives!

All I am saying is I can't wait for the Some Kind Of Monster-style documentary meltdown extravaganza. One of the most entertaining documentaries of all time.

Seriously.

Does anybody else think the Sweet Bleeders are going to end up looking like the members of Metallica in their middle age? Mark should grow his hair out.

There's no way it is "twat" , this guy is a scientist.

come on.

He's also the scientist who did a commentary for the Danny Boyle film Sunshine, the one about flying into the sun, and I'm pretty sure he cursed all over that s---.

Fair amount of interesting science stuff in that one too, by the way.

Complete bullshit. If it isn't tracked down by Tuesday, the posse organizes at noon at 7th and Roosevelt. We mount horses, shoot up the goddamn town till we get answers.

If you're in a shitty Phoenix band reading this, you should think about donating your own axes. Do us all a favor.

Sympathies.

Just caught up on the new Battlestar Galactica too, which is maybe the Wire of sci-fi television. I'm guessing Helo is the last cylon.

Not possible. Helo had a child with a cylon, and cylon's cannot reproduce amongst themselves.

God I'm a dork.

Who knows if that applies to the final five though. But it's got to be either him, Roslin or Gaius. Only main characters on the Basestar when Deanna says, "Only four are with your fleet." And I think Roslin would be lame and Gaius is too obvious.

Though if it's him, why wasn't "Watchtower" playing in his head at the nebula. I'll have to think on this.

Spoiler

As someone who hasn't seen season four yet, please mark spoilers before taking the conversation too far.

Or face my nerd rage.

Your choice. :)

Apologies. Maybe we should just be texting this discussion Mr. Marquez and me.

we just finished watching season 4 of the wire last night. that is the best show ever. period.

Season Five ends the show in a great way too. Though I will say I wasn't satisfied with how Omar's story ended. Maybe the badassest homosexual stickup boy ever.

Going through the Scott Walker 5 CD retrospective - "In 5 Easy Pieces".

He's like the Bob Dylan of over-the-top 60s torch pop. And his new stuff puts any current experimental rock to shame. To shame! I wish I had this music when I was: losing my virginity/smoking my first joint/getting dumped for the first time/learning to walk.

I've asked many Smiths fans and no one has been able to tell me why they're so awesome. It's not that I dislike the Smiths it's just that I've never seen why they're so awesome.

The first half of Of Montreal's new one, Skeletal Lamping, is pretty damn good.
