#1236182 U.S. GIRLS / ETHER ISLAND + MORE at The Rhythm Room (sun.nov.24)

Posted by select on 19 November 2013 - 10:02 PM in Shows and Stuff

Sunday, November 24th, 2013

U.S Girls (http://yousgirls.blogspot.com/)

"Meghan Remy makes haunted highway songs. Her records, which she releases under the name U.S. Girls, conjure a moment deep in the bleary-eyed hours of an overnight drive, when you've stumbled upon an eclectic radio program hosted by somebody too hypnotizingly weird to be trusted with a primetime slot. (If they belong in any David Lynch movie, it's Lost Highway, no doubt.)" - Pitchfork

"U.S. Girls mastermind Meghan Remy isn't going to let you experience a piece of her art without kicking in a little brainpower" - Spin magazine

with

Ether Island (http://etherisland.tumblr.com/)

"We’ve grown soft. Ether Island hasn’t. They are pissed. They are vengeful." - Tinymixtapes

"A mud-flood of thick tectonic shred over a buried beat."
- Not Not Fun Records

Tuesday June 25 2013

THE BODY (Thrill Jockey/At A Loss)

For 10 years the rumors have slowly spread from the Mid-South through the New England region of the United States of a group, known as THE BODY, declaring war on all they consider “FALSE” through rituals involving solid state amplification and jolting percussion. Their latest addition to the arsenal against the contrived is All The Waters Of The Earth Turn To Blood. The duo has allied itself with the Assembly of Light Choir and members of bands as varied as Bonedust, Callers, Dead Times, Fang Island, Human Beast, Lichens, Made In Mexico, Otesanek, Trtrkmmr, What Cheer Brigade, & Work/Death on their latest.

Swearin' (members of P.S. Eliot, Big Soda, Radiator Hospital, and Bad Blood - on Salinas Records)

"This is punk verging on indie rock a la the Measure [SA] and Cheap Girls, with a heavy debt to '90s groups like Breeders, Juliana Hatfield Three and the Rentals" - Punknews.org

"It's refreshing to find a group that sounds sincerely as though it's got nothing to hide." - Pitchfork

"I want to try and explain the effect Swearin’ has on me because the album swells with the things I crave — literally, crave — from music." - Dusted Magazine

"The words “indie rock” are crucial here. While the term has long since ceased to have value as a descriptor, Swearin’ deliver a sound that could serve as a definition for what the genre used to be. (Band To Watch)" - Stereogum

Pop. 1280 (on Sacred Bones Records)

"NYC’s hardest-working scumbags in the scuzzfuckery business" - Village Voice

''The sonic backdrop of these dystopian vignettes remains largely unchanged from their previous effort: an industrial punk chassis tricked out with a sickly patina of Birthday Party guitar and 80s slasher movie synth.' - Tiny Mixtapes

"After some pretty flawlessly disgusting 12“s, NYC scumsuckers Pop. 1280 have finally returned for their debut slab of synth-tweaked, gutter-gazing, jeans-pissing noise-rock." - SPIN

#1237579 PERFECT PUSSY / SOFT SHOULDER / NUMB BATS @wall street (tue.dec.17)

Posted by select on 05 December 2013 - 11:42 PM in Shows and Stuff

PERFECT PUSSY (from Syracuse, NY. featuring ex Shoppers)

“On stage, front woman Meredith Graves has the charisma of a star in the making.” - Billboard

“I Have Lost All Desire for Feeling, instantly evokes basement shows rank with fresh sweat, dark except for strings of christmas lights, windows shaking, overloaded PA bleating away, and the band across the jampacked room discernible only by the occasional upward-flung limb. If you make it to one of this Syracuse band’s two outer-borough shows this week, expect to leave with bangs dripping, ears keening, and heart pounding.” - papermag

“One of the boldest new rock bands.” - Pitchfork

“These punk kids from the mean streets of Syracuse, New York, deliver high-energy slabs of mayhem-friendly post punk noise, a wall of guitar and Casio. Meredith Graves knows how to run her mosh pit like a dictator runs a birthday party.” - Rolling Stone

“One of the best debuts you’re likely to hear this year.” - Stereogum

"Record-collector-rock for record-collector-rock-collectors, 34 gone-too-quick minutes of chin-stroking, bowl-cashing, amp-ruining, Socrates-dying-in-the-fucking-gutter punk." - Pitchfork (#40 top 50 Albums of 2013)

"These Brooklyn slack-rockers show such a knack for bite-size hooks, tightly wound riffs and post-collegiate humor that if they don't watch out, they could wind up being really successful." - Billboard

"This album [Parquet Court's Light Up Gold] is so excellent, it basically ruined my life." - Rob Sheffield on Rolling Stone (#2 Best Albums of 2013)

Saturday July 6th 2013

OUTER MINDS (ex Lover!, Baseball Furies, Dirges, Black Beauties, on Hozac/Southpaw)

"Chicago’s explosive Outer Minds have finally come to the surface after simmering in the underworld in several different incarnations over the past few years, and with unbelievably great results. Sharpening their sound into a legion of 60s pop/psych textures and nuances normally reserved for the baroque set with their impeccable glockenspiel-laden arrangements, Outer Minds weave a rich web of sound around impossibly perfect hooks and deliver an impressive EP worthy of your immediate attention. Lead by Zach Medearis (Black Beauties, Lover!) and A-Ron Orlowski’s (Baseball Furies, Lover!, Dirges) fine assemblage of rough-cut harmonies, everything fell into place to create this sumptuous wall of sound that will blow your little mind to bits." -Todd Novak/Hozac Records

Reviews of La Luz:

Heavy on retro atmosphere and surf rock riffs, but it's also a promising display of the group's sharp, hooky songcraft. – Pitchfork

Dreamy, beachy tunes that'll make you want to go on a road trip with your BFFs and never come back. – Bust Magazine

Tracks that stick you in the middle of a surfy, stony, dance-y, girl-group garage party. – The Portland Mercury

A few weeks ago, during their sold-out show at Magma Fest, it hit me that I'm not the only person who has caught on to them. All of Seattle DIY was there that night and was in love, everyone crammed into each other's space bubbles just to get a listen. – The Stranger (Seattle)
