-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

It's somewhat cool to look over the park and see little glimpses of orange, but overall I think they are kind of dumb. As a friend of mine said, "It looked like he raided Target for all their shower curtains."
This guy is getting press for doing a knock off called The Somerville Gates. They're no longer on his site, but if you do a google search for Somerville Gates you can see some of his pictures around.

This is a complete waste of money, was the city responsible for footing the bill or was it the artist's responsibility? I'm pretty damn sure 21 million dollars could've been spent a hell of a lot better. If you want to use it for art, invest in a permanent, useful memorial for umm... you know, whats that minor event that occurred in New York? Oh yeah... 9/11, I guess I forgot thanks to the bright orange gates spreading joy and goodwill....
edit: Just read that the artists themselves are paying for it, so that takes a lot of the rage of waste out of me. Still, I think its pretty damn stupid...

The Gates Made of Cheese & Peanut Butter Crackers
You know, people with $21 million spend many times that much all the time on much more selfish, wasteful things than this, and we don't hear about it or talk about it as much, and we don't care. Is the impression I get. How come some of us get mad when the Cristos use their money to make art that some people enjoy? Are the same people angry every time Trump gets married or Britney buys a house or something?
Usually I understand where people are coming from, but my husband started with this Cristo-bashing thing, and I just don't get it. It's like a foreign language.
"A rising tide lifts all boats." Some people have more to eat because the Gates are there. It would be a pretty dismal world if there was no art and all we all did was make each other sandwiches all day.
And, since we're sharing our opinions, the idea that artists should be punished for their success and popularity, that money should be taken away from people who know what they want to spend it on and allotted to talented people who are just starting out just because they're just starting out, sounds kind of fascist to me as as well. When have you gotten a job because you were equally qualified but less experienced than someone else? Because your resume was really short and boring? Let people be.
and if there were leaves on the trees, you couldn't see the gates very well...

in my opinion, that 'art' is very ugly,
and offensive because of the amount of money it cost to do it
why orange? it looks like a construction site.

now that i've stepped back and thought about it,
maybe this art is intended to be ugly, and it's there to make people think.
The color orange reminding me
of "a construction site" could very well be one of his many
symbolic intentions
I still kind of wish that instead of spending such a
large sum of money to create an artistic statement...that he
would use it in a more constructive way

What is it? -- I couldn't figure the website out, but I liked the photos of bubble tents sharing heat with buildings, if that's what they were.Has anyone heard about this?
I guess if one finds The Gates ugly and/or pointless, it's hard to support them. I thought people were just hating on them on principle.
