We don't have a local "INDIE/COLLEGE" RADIO STATION on an FM format? (Do not reference the ASU BLAZE -- you can only get reception in Tempe if youre lucky)
Because, the way I see it - while WE think these bands have a bunch of fans and stuff here in PHX- Spoon, Earlimart, Mates are NOT played on the radio, thus generating a buzz from the masses....like KXLU and Indie 103 in LA, 91x in San Diego, UWs station in Seattle, UT Austin and Austin City Limits, etc.
Maybe we need to re-invent the whole KUKQ/Collage radio vibe to generate what popular radio won't? I think people here are ... just uninformed. That's something we can change.

I agree with natalie's point and I will add only these points for discussion. I heard that the tix were being sold via ticketmaster but there was a $10 fee for buying them..making an $18 ticket to an almost thirty dollar ticket...yikes! I would think that many of the people who know who Mates, Earlimart, Spoon are are the kind of people who thought that the venue was big enough to wait until the day to buy rather than purchase the tickets on the internet with the $10 fee (that is exactly what I would do...I have only ever bought tickets in advance for a few shows) Also, I would venture to guess that many people who were planning on going to this show didn't think it would sell out there fore there wasn't a rush to go out and buy tickets in advance like so many other shows here. Maybe if the DJ's broadcasting the add for the festival would have played a few of the band's songs over the air there might have been more people in the "mainstream" willing to take a chance. And, probably a one more mainstream band that could bring in the kind of preselling needed for this would have helped. Someone like Interpol or Jimmy Eat World (thanks Kristi I am borrowing your example).I think someone, maybe Steve, made mentioned that "tons" of people like mates, earlimart, spoon, etc... but unfortunately those always seem to be the same people. I know we've got this comparison to other cities debate and stuff going on but..

I don't know...it is a really sad situation all around with many variables to say why things didn't go the way they did. And when you get all those variables together you get some pissed off people and some hard decisions to make. Charlie did the right thing and cut his losses...its a part of the biz that is being a promoter. The issue isn't just about Phoenix.
Maybe IKEA had something do with this? Didn't they have a huge sale planned for that weekend?

i know "crying over spilt milk doesnt help thigs at all. i was kinda just bitching, and kinda trying to speak to the people who were defending this city. i love this city. my home. i will venture to say i will never live anywhere else. but for some reason, people link their Az pride to this discussion, and are unwilling to admit the obvious. NOT ENOUGH REGULAR JOES CARE ABOUT THE ARTS!!!!!!!!! if art appreciation was graded, phoenix would need to plead with its professor for some extra credit projects. F !
now that we've identified the problem, lets talk about how to fix it.
im with nat. in this city, radio is king. the format were on it for 3 months about 2 years ago, and they can draw 1000 people still today.
who wants to bankroll a fm station? im in for a c note.
in the meantime, im gonna work on writing good songs. and keeping my van tuned up.
i love you all dearly, my new (and some old) shizz friends.

charlie is a badass. it sucks that this happened, but from the first time i saw the flyer i thought, there is no way this is going to sell tickets. people don't want to pay to sit through bands they don't like for most of the day. to me it's really that simple.
to blame it on phoenix is totally unfair. to call a town week for not buying tickets to a show they don't want to see is crazy. people will make this town what they will make it. if they don't support something, they're saying "we don't want it." i don't see why there's a duty of the people to pay for entertainment they don't think is good enough. if anything, i think it'd only promote the wrong idea. it sucks, but nobody wanted to see this. after frustrations cool, i'm sure charlie would just say "i won't try that again" and keep doing what he does so well. i seriously doubt he thinks this city sucks because they didn't buy his tickets. unfortunate things happen to great people all the time.

22 bucks is too much? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING????!!!!!! have you been to see a movie in the last two years? did you pay for your girlfriend? did you order a coke and popcorn? to stare a pictures of people. you cant throw down 22 bucks to hang out with some friends in beautiful weather to see people play actual instruments in actual bands? either you have the weakest job there is where you dont even get paid minimum wage, or you are too lazy to work 40 hours a week. 22 buck was a lot of money 60 years ago. its 2005, people. 20 bucks barely buys a pack of smokes and a coffee.

have you heard the latest record from every other band you claim to not want to sit through? i'd be willing to bet that if you like ANY TWO of the bands on the bill, youd enjoy a few more. new, fresh.
i hadn't heard of elliot smith until my friend andrew said we had to go to stinkweeds to see him instead of seeing jimmyeatworld and mineral at the alley.
thanks andrew.

2.) Aaron, I'd be down to help as much as I could for an Indie FM station.
3.) I wish I could have seen that Jimmy Eat World / Mineral show. I have that 7 inch split they both put out with Sense Field on baby blue vinyl. All right!
