I didn't go to this show mainly because I was invited to a friend's early Thanksgiving dinner, which started at 3, and partly because I didn't like most of the bands on the bill. I would have liked to see Mates of State and Peachcake, but I'd rather see them in smaller venues. I would have liked to see better local bands on the bill, besides Peachcake. I have seen Ticker Tape Parade, El Oso Negro, Reuben's Accomplice and Go Big Casino. They're all right, but I don't think they're the best of what Phoenix has to offer. TTP and EON to me act a little elitist and rock starish. I've tried getting them to play Borders but they weren't interested or said they were and then never returned my phone calls. So I'm a little biased. But I am the first to admit I'm a really big local music fan and I think we have tons of great local bands here, which is the reason I started the Borders local band series here almost three years ago. I do think if more good local bands were on the bill it might have brought out more people. But it just wasn't the day for people to spend more than $20 to go see a show. People wanted to go out that night. Because they were all at Shotfest at Hollywood Alley. Now that was fun. Great local bands, tons of good people, and a cool small venue. And it was only $5. Those were the right ingredients for last Saturday. I love the Necronauts, the Minibosses and Vin-Fiz because they're all great people (and have had no problem playing Borders several times.) I feel bad Charlie had to cancel the show because I know he lost a lot of money and I know he's a good guy who tries hard to bring good music to the Valley. But unfortunately most of the people that live here don't listen to good music. I'm surprised whenever Modified sells out, to tell you the truth. I get mad everytime a band bypasses Phoenix and plays Tucson instead, or just chooses to miss Arizona entirely. But I don't mind driving to Tucson to see a show or even driving or flying out of town to see a good band or festival, when I have the money. But I don't make a lot of money, and I know a lot of you guys don't either. So sometimes that plays a factor in which shows we go to. Should we choose The Grand Cayenne Music Festival, paying Ticketmaster's fees, or go to Shotfest, where it's $5 and only $5 to have a great time. I guess Saturday showed what people wanted to do, at least in my opinion.

Love like you don't need the money, dance like you've never been hurt, and work like nobody's watching.

I can count the number of times Charlie has brought great new bands to Phoenix that no one cared about at the time. He brought Bright Eyes, Death Cab, Moduse Mouse, Ryan Adams, Eliot Smith, Maron 5. All when they were playing in fornt of 50 people. Did he bring them because he thought they would some day be huge and make him a buck? No. They are huge because people like charlie beleived in them when no one did.

If Charlie stoped doing shows I would really worry about this towns sustainability.

Also Tortoise in 02 at the old Nita's (McClintock + Rio Salado), no one showed up... Mogwai (before word spread about them)
I think everything's gone a bit downhill after they closed the old Nita's. I agree about Charlie...
And actually we're the 5th largest city, behind NYC, LA, Chicago, and Houston. We just passed Philly some months ago. Regardless, we're a big fucking city.

that Tortoise show was AMAZING!

sorry of you think i act elitist and rockstarish. i mean, my band is the best band in town, and we're gonna be big stars, but........

seriously though, i dont remember ever being personally asked to play at borders. maybe i was. drunk maybe?

anyway, sorry for the wrong impression. i certainly dont feel like a rockstar. dont really feel elitist either. but, if thats how i come across, i guess i'll have to work on that.

-OR-

i might not have to work on that. i just re-read your post, and it seems that your opinion is that if bands dont play at borders, they are elitist and rock starish.

flawed logic, im afraid, if that is indeed what you meant.

also, you seemed to know information about a certain band (who's singer and i dont really get along) playing at stinkweeds. interesting. he doesnt really like ian of el oso negro either. very interesting.....

ultamately, right or wrong, i dont really care. i mean, ive definately been percieved by some to be full of myself. if you percieved me that way, you wouldnt be the first, i guess. i cant really say anything to defend myself wothout sounding like a dipshit. i like my band. i like the music that we play. i guess that makes me rockstarelitistish? i can like with that.

honestly, i dont remember ever being asked, but i dont really think we'd go over well in a book store. we're loud. i could be wrong though, although it would be the first time.

anyway, not really trying to pick a fight here, just thought id offer up some new thoughts.

but I'd rather see them in smaller venues.

But we have all seen that show, the point was to do something different. Do something larger than just a Mates Of State Show.

I would have liked to see better local bands on the bill.

There were 6 good locals on this show. How much does he have to cator to your personal tastes? Do you really think this didn't work because one local over another got the OPENING SLOT? What one or two bands do you think would have really made a difference?

They're all right, but I don't think they're the best of what Phoenix has to offer.

Sorry Charlie didn't get the best Phoenix has to offer. I thought Jim Adkins fourth show ever as Go Big Casion was kinda neat. I may agree with you that these bands are not my favorit if i had to only pick 2 or 3 bands in town, but they are far from the bottom as you make it seem like they were.

I do think if more good local bands were on the bill it might have brought out more people.

6 solid locals on this show wasn't enought? Do you really think 2 or 3 more would have made a 700 ticket diffrence? I can think of three or four bands in twon that MIGHT be able to make a diffrence.

Because they were all at Shotfest at Hollywood Alley.

I had heard shot fest was huge, but I didn't realize that it was that big. How did they fit thousands of people into the Hoolywood ally? I really don't think Shot Fest was the reason this didn't work.

they're all great people (and have had no problem playing Borders several times.)

So weather a person plays a free show in a bookstore is a mesare of their charector? I have had bands turn down my shows countless times, including The Necronauts and Minnibosses who you mention, I have never held it against a band. The idea of playing in borders isn't for everyone.

Should we choose The Grand Cayenne Music Festival, paying Ticketmaster's fees

Tickets wer $22 total after all fees at Stinkweeds and Hoodlums. Charlie went out of his way to make sure people dont have to pay those fees (as he does for every show of his all year long). If you were really worried about that it seems more like your problem for being ignorant than his for doing that.

I guess Saturday showed what people wanted to do, at least in my opinion.

And what was that? 100 people show up for one local show and you generlize out to the thousands of indie rock fans in Arizona? Where was everyone else? I would like to know.

Sorry I book a local band series for free at some unnamed bookstore. It's hard to get people to even come out to a free show so I'm always trying to tell people about the shows. I'm not charging people for the show and I'm definitely not making any money off of it. I'm not saying that anyone who doesn't play this unnamed bookstore is rockstarish or elitist, but I have had problems with several bands, and I was just mentioning Tickertape Parade and El Oso Negro since they were the bands playing at the festival. I'm not about bashing bands, but when I asked TTP to play I was told by Dan, who I believe is no longer in the band?, that they weren't playing any local shows and then the next month they were supposed to play a free show at a park in Peoria. I know I shouldn't get bent out of shape because I know not every band wants to play a corporate bookstore, but at least just tell me you don't want to play and don't beat around the bush. I can handle it, believe me. I have a lot of other reasons for thinking this but I won't get into it here. I believe in local bands and that's why I do this band series. I stand by everything I said and don't want to keep debating it.

No one is against the local series you do in borders, or questioning your trying to help out the local scene. Both a great.

like i said in a previous post, i dont remember ever being asked to play borders. by anyone. seems like dan didnt want to play it, and didnt bother to ask the rest of us. if it makes you feel better, we didnt play the jeremiah show. and if you would have aked me to play borders, i would have just said no. as i stated in a post on the thread, i dont think we'd go over well in a bookstore. we're too loud. i might be wrong, but i would have at least been honest with you about it.

people who make art care about how it is presented. for instance, ttp brings our own soundman to every show because we want the music to be mixed properly. there is nothing worse than playing a show and sounding bad because a vocal is too soft or a guitar is too loud. you only get one chance to make a first impression. i was out of town for the holidays, but i heard from a few different people that a couple of bands (that i know are good bands) sounded bad at the stinkweeds thiing on saturday. not because they are bad bands, but because it wasnt the ideal circumstances to present their art.

I think this thread as well as a few others should probably just be closed and left alone. I understand talking this stuff out and getting things out in the air but it just gets stupid after awhile.

some things to realize:
We all want the scene to be better, even though we all don't agree on how it's to be done, otherwise we wouldn't be wasting our time on a local music forum.
Even though we support local music, we do it in our own way and some of us don't like being told how to support it
It's okay if someone doesn't like Charlie, it's okay if someone doesn't like Brodie, it's okay if nobody likes me. Nobody will be able to have EVERYONE like them and shouldn't expect so, but it is pretty sorry to hear people bash other people just for the sake of bashing them because for some reason everyone else seems like they need to throw in their own little jabs to someone when in the real world would probably keep their mouth shut, myself included.

I like coming on here and reading posts about shows coming up, I go to some but not all, I go to the azpunk board sometimes, or the modified board, I like it out here in arizona. But when threads start becoming pissing contests, it's like the special olympics, even if you win you're still retarded, and crap like this just makes our scene look bad when people trying to defend it are fighting with each other on how to do it!

I respect those who keep there mouths shut in these pissing contests moreso then those who keep instigating it further like myself :)

I guess I will now take my own advice and shut the hell up, I won't post anymore on this thread again.
