-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

My first thought was "why would some guys from Florida State University care about some Tucson guys dancing?"what is FSU guys?
U of A, I am ready to fight!
Obviously this is too bad and hopefully an isolated incident. Unless I am missing something it doesn't sound like there were many "innocent" participants (depending on which "crew" you run with). A girl getting her eye socket jacked up trying to avoid the pit at the Modified was really unfortunate. This Tucson issue sounds like some thug brought a knife to a gun fight.

Unfortunately this isn't the first and it isn't the last time this will happen, by no means should anyone take this as a dismissive statement on my part.
I could go on for hours about this kind of stuff but I will keep quiet.
For those who play in bands, promote shows, and run venues, they will have to keep working to make this place safer and hope these tragic things don't happen and that parents are cool about letting their kids go to shows.
I don't have a problem with cops coming to any of my shows, and nobody should, and maybe after awhile if they did frequent more often they would be able to differentiate the different types of shows out there and what to be more aware of.
For those of us who don't respond, I don't think it is because they don't think it affects them. Some of us realize it affects us alot more then can be put into words on a messageboard.

Message board?
This is The Shizz.
Chromelodeon manages to get all the furniture from their hotel into the lake a few years back...and people are worried about shizzies?

No, this violence wasn't an isolated incident.
Yes, this will affect all of us, if only because parents, police, etc. AREN'T going to differentiate between moshmetal shows and indie/emo/art rock/rock n' roll shows.
They fucking raided First FUCKING Friday, for christ's sake.
Just wait and see what happens next...
BTW, the comparison to the Smell was a good one to make... I talked to a musician in L.A. today who is booked at and frequents the Smell, and they were totally confounded as to this situation.

Heidi Rowley of the Tucson Citizen has issued the following report:
A Mesa man was shot to death and several people were injured last night in a fight at Skrappy's, a downtown Tucson club popular with teenagers.
The violence broke out just after 9 p.m. during a concert by hard-core metal bands [DONNYBROOK, SHATTERED REALM, HOODS and BLACK MY HEART] and at the club at 201 E. Broadway.
Skrappy's bills itself as an alcohol- and drug-free club for people under 21. Police said they have had few calls for problems there.
"We have not had a lot of calls for service there," police spokesman Sgt. Ramon Batista said. "They've never had anything of this magnitude there. We have had calls for service there, but nothing that serious."
Homicide detective Sgt. Mark Fuller said, "I'm not aware of many calls for violence at the club."
Police said the 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at a Tucson hospital. They declined to release his name.
No arrests have been made, but Batista said among the witnesses interviewed were several people police considered suspects.
Fuller said a fight started inside and spilled out to the parking lot, where the shooting occurred. He declined to provide more details.
Witnesses said it appeared as many as 40 people were involved in the fight.
Many types of bands play at the club, including hip-hop, punk and metal.
No one representing Skrappy's was available for comment last night or early today, and it was unknown if the club will be open for business today or tonight.
Skrappy's doors were locked this morning, and no one appeared to be inside.
The telephone included a taped message telling of last night's concert, saying tickets were $8. It also told of tomorrow night's concert but gave no indication if the club will be open tomorrow night.
The club's Web site, www.skrappys.org, is out of date, not showing concerts or information past the end of November.
DONNYBROOK's "Street Brutality Tour" with SHATTERED REALM, HOODS and BLACK MY HEART is scheduled to conclude Thursday (Dec. 8) with an appearance at The Club House in Las Vegas, Nevada.
also...
One man was shot to death and several others injured (one individual was hit in the head with a hammer) after a fight broke out during a show on The Street Brutality Tour featuring Shattered Realm, Donnybrook and Hoods in Tucson, Arizona last night. The incident occured at Skrappy's, which bills itself as an alcohol- and drug-free club for people under 21. Police said they have had few calls for problems there.
The man fatally shot at a music club last night as Ray Darrin Pierson, 27, of Mesa. Pierson was in Tucson to see Shattered Realm. He was shot outside the club after a fight involving at least 20 people inside the venue, said Sgt. Ramon Batista, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. Pierson died at a hospital. Several other people were injured according to Batista, but he declined to discuss details.
Homicide detectives are trying to interview everyone who was at the Shattered Realm show - up to 200 people. Detectives found a handgun outside the club, but won't say who was carrying it. No one has been arrested so far. Police are asking anyone who was at the show and anyone who may have information about the fight and shooting to call 911 or 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line of the Pima County Attorney's Office.
Several emails to Lambgoat.com owners suggest that the fight was between local hardcore kids and FSU members.
Skrappy's doors were locked this morning, and no one appeared to be inside.

some people really just don't care.

I thought the whole thing about crews was totally idiotic, especially how the writer tried to put a positive spin on it. Sure, the members look out for each other. But only for each other! They could give a fuck about anyone else! I like to think that I am looking out for people wherever I go, whether at a show, in my neighborhood, at the grocery store, whatever. Their little gangs just limit the number of people they look out!
I thought it really sucked that when that girl who got hurt at the Modified show, no one stepped up to take responsibility or apologize. None of the cowards at that show had the balls. That's FUCKED UP. It's a good thing we have people like the people on the Shizz who will actually do something to help - and she wasn't even a part of our "crew."

[edit]also, what the fuck, pray for skrappys? pray for the people whos lives have been changed by this horrible tragic event! i might catch some heat for this...but i cant help but think that skrappys is at least somewhat responsible for this the way im understanding this. 'pray for skrappys' sounds like these people are worried about telling their account of what happened regardless of the situation, and if they're afraid of the truth regardless of the consequence, then it seems like theres more info then we're really ever going to be able to get...

Monday, the older brother of former Suns' player, Quentin Richardson, was shot to death in a robbery in Chicago. Richardson also lost an older brother to a shooting death when he was 12. His mother died of cancer when he was a young boy.
These tragidies happen all the time, randomly.
People die in car accidents all the time, but we don't see people crying out for a ban on driving. Still, people should be able to seek entertainment without threat of death.
I, too, thought, why does Florida State University care about Tucson kids dancing. Their posturing and allegiances are ridiculous. In ten years these people will be embarassed they were involved in such a tragic incident that lead to senseless loss of life.
It's like Morrissey's song "First of the Gang to Die"
Hector was the first of the gang with a gun in his hand,
the first to do time, and the first of the gang to die"
