If this keeps up, hardcore in AZ will wither the way hip hop did after all the parking lot shootings. With the cumulative violence in the scene over the last year or so, I actually am thinking twice about going to hardcore shows. This sucks... if venues that host more than just hardcore (i.e. most of them) get shut down it will indeed affect us all. What happens if the next show at Modified leads to a lawsuit against the venue for not providing enough security?

what i don't understand is, i have heard from people around that people know who some of these culprits are. like, there are tons of witnesses at shows. i never heard of anyone ever being arrested for any of this stuff, and it is a damn shame that it has to come to someone getting KILLED at a show and for cops to interrogate people on order to find out who does this stuff. people that start fights or hurt people on purpose at shows should be banned for life from the venue and face the appropriate jail time. unvelievable.

At least you're passionate about something (as long as it directly affects you in some way)!this is insane. i remember when that violent incident happened at the mason jar (right?) a while back and the guy luckily didn't sue the venue...which i might add was the most incredible act of selflessness i've ever heard of (so long as i have my facts straight). if someone gets really hurt or killed at a venue, it would be so easy for a good lawyer to shut down any venue.

Good work!

But what about things that don't DIRECTLY affect you? (ie 25 YEARS AGO TODAY thread)
You've got me scratching my head on that one...

I don't know man, have you read Henry Rollins' Black Flag tour diary "Get In The Van"? Hardcore music and violence galore. Granted, not a lot of shootings, but generous amounts of ass-kicking. If that sort of violence was the norm then, it seems to me that violence at shows is actually less now? From what I've read, I don't know how much you can blame Skrappy's. The fight started inside, but they stopped the show and tried to kick everyone out. The gun was in the man's car... venues can't be expected to search cars as well. In any case, we're all quick to judge when the details are pretty hazy. It seems pretty clear that hardcore is developing a problem with violent 'crews' infesting shows.

I was astonished to come to Phoenix and see NO security at 95% of the shows I attended. Fights happen. They will NOT go away. Self policing does NOT work. Venues are responsible for providing a safe place to see/play a show. As much as I hated being searched in CA, It was for good cause. It was inconvenient, and it's easy to bitch about fascist power hungry security guards, but it worked.
None of this really applies to the Shizz. But it didn't used to apply to AZPunk either.
Hardcore IS a violent genre. Almost everyone wishes it wasn't. Comparrisons to hip-hop are well deserved.
I applaud Tyler King's effort (keep this on the DL, I'm busy ribbing him on AZPunk.) to keep HC alive and positive, but simply refusing to claim the problem starters as part of the genre/scene/whatever is insane. Ignoring the problem will not solve it. Trusting these angry vengence fueled all-for-one style crews will not work. Someone needs to be there ENTIRELY to prevent this shit.
Where was even ONE security person to stop people from bringing in weapons as obvious as machetes, hammers, guns, bulletproof vests, etc.

the guys on the az punk msgboard dont seem to have much tact in the situation. its pretty disheartening to read through all 9 pages of that.. =(
some of them have tact, others are teenagers
-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.
