I haven't had a chance to check out the new stuff on Grand, but that's still too west side for what I have planned to be successful. The population the further west you go is not supportive enough.

the area of grand ave we are talking about is downtown phoenix, not sun city. and is definatley not "west side"

grand ave is like a 3 minute drive from modified

saying that grand ave is west side is like saying the emerald lounge was west side

grand ave area is probably the only place downtown that is affordable, but most likely not for long.

south "downtown" phoenix aka the other side of the tracks is also probably affordable right now, becasue there is nothing there,

which brings up the story of the modified, when kimber hooked that place up there was nothing there

i would strongly suggest to at least take a look there, between 7th ave and 15th ave.

i predict that grand ave will become mill ave in 30 years, so soak it up now, these will be the days we look back on a say, RAD!

All the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

Actually, Naz hit it right on the head.  In the morning/afternoon it will function as a bakery/cafe.  And there will be two seperate "bar" areas.  One will function as a standard live music venue; pay your $5, have a beer, watch some bands play.  The other bar will be completely seperated from the stage area, thus you can actually carry on a conversation, use your cellphone, hit on that sexy bartender, escape from the sucky band playing in the other room, etc.  And there will be NO cover charge for the secondary bar.  That way the "normals" from ASU can still come and check it out without having to listen to you and your weird bands! hehehe

That way, each aspect can contribute to the entire business, rather than relying on the music-only aspect to stay afloat.  And we have several other special events in mind and other things that regular music-only venues would never even attempt.  All these factors will allow us to keep the cover charge at $5 and the drinks and food all reasonably priced.

My old band After Any Accident played a venue like this in San Francisco. The show was with Roma 79 and this band called Yellow Dancer who were a little more mainstream-rock. The venue was Edinbergh Castle, and was set up so the bar was on floor level, and the room to see bands was upstairs, with a door on it and cover charges were only charged to people who went in to see the bands. AAA played second out of the three bands, and there were a dozen or maybe 15 people watching. When we finished we walked back out to the bar area and the place was PACKED! But nobody went into the band room to see us because they'd never heard of us. Many did go up to see Yellow Dancer, though, so the take from the door was pretty good at the end of the night. Anyway, my long story is to illustrate how having the music and the door charge segregated from other parts of the bar can be good for the venue (Edinbergh Castle raked in some cash this particular night) but bad for the bands.

South Phoenix is actually looking better.

It's still close enough to the other venues downtown, there are some incredible properties available for great prices, but each city has different zoning ordinances which I'll have to fight through first.  And the city is pushing out the slums and drive-through liquor stores and putting up Super Walmarts.  There are million dollar homes along south mountain.  It's a new suburban sprawl from Tempe all the way west to Avondale.  And there is literally NO type of entertainment venues at all.

I live in South Phoenix, and personally I'd love to see a venue go in, and would frequent it... uh... frequently.

consider other clubs you've been to that you liked and why. i don't live in phoenix anymore but casey moores and the old nitas are the only places i can think of in phoenix that have the type of thing that all the cool venues around the country have. which is...character. do something cool, call it something cool, and bring in good bands.

i can understand not wanting the ASU type crowd as patrons, i guess. but the club's gonna suck if there's no djs, hip hop, norteno, country etc, etc...

Some of the indy-alternative-political-artistic-social outcasts you might see at the next Modest Mouse or Fall Out Boy show, but you wouldn't see a swarm of them at some rock club in Tempe to see Andrew Jackson Jihad and Fatigo. The rest of them are hanging out at Dos Gringos or the Library and getting drunk and listening to Coldplay in the car on the way home.

Check out the top-ten most listed bands from ASU's facebook:

1. Jack Johnson
2. DMB
3. Sublime
4. Coldplay
5. Green Day
6. The Beatles
7. Incubus
8. The Killers
9. The Format
10. Fall Out Boy

I love this post!!

by the way - i work at a high school in the west valley ... and these kids WILL COME TO SHOWS in downtown phx. especially when they're following their favorite locals - which are currently (FYI):, lydia, good morning providence, stiletto formal, goodbye tomorrow.

i'd like to see promoters "blending" music genres more. great start is Oh Shit A Fest!

to add on to what john said, i've set up a few shows at a place here that had the band room seperate from the bar. when the bar was slow, not many people came in to see the band. but since the show room door was right up next to the bar, the music would leak through whenever you'd get a drink, and once the bar got crowded, a decent amount of the regular patrons paid cover and came to check the bands out. so i suppose part of it involves letting your regular patrons get a whiff of the cool stuff behind the closed door.

maybe you could include a speaker system in the seperate bar that played the music from the show. not loudly, but enough that you could space out whenever the person you were talking to started to become boring.

another option might be to never charge a cover and pay the bands a pre-set percentage of the bar total. this was employed at emerald and i've seen it at a few other places. of course, this only works at a bar. so all ages shows wouldn't work. so fuck that idea.

Emperors of Japan

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

In the odd event that you need another reason to dislike Fall Out Boy:

http://video.google....&q=joy division

I borrowed this from Estrogen in the Currently Listening To thread. Disclaimer, I couldn't make it past the 1:15 or so mark so maybe it gets better towards the end?

my two cents, avoid strip mall locations, wet t-shirt contests, the Chadwicks. And I should be the last one to tell you how to dress but please, no vests without a shirt underneath ( Electric Ballroom) or wooden clogs!!!

the casbah in sd had a seperate room and they had cameras on the stage and monitors in the segmented bar areas. that was cool because if the band that was on sucked, you could back and drink and keep an eye on the stage for the new band to come on.

Make it like the Korova Milk Bar in A Clockwork Orange. White plastic sculptures of naked women with multicolored hair that dispense drug-laden liquids from their breasts.

At least focus on the atmosphere--strive to incorporate decorating options that give the club a unified and unique feel. Work with an interior designer, even.

We play Last Exit frequently, and I would say that place is pretty generic (strip mall, fish tank, random photographs on the walls). One thing I do like about it is that it has a little section of couches near the stage where people can lounge. I am much more prone to sticking around for a bad and ordering more drinks if I am comfortable.

Hire a sound guy/gal who knows what to do. I hate working with crappy sound people.

I wanna open the first (for Earthings, anyways) Space Station Music Venue. It would be badass: lazer beams, floating people, space ninjas, space pirates, and Annunaki everywhere!

Seriously man. Tang and Vodka is where it's at.

"That's no moon, that's a MUSIC VENUE!" - Luke Skywalker

I'm sorry I have nothing constructive to add to this thread. I'll go to the venue when it opens tho.
