Check out the Star Trek : TNG novels, noteably 'Vendetta," by Peter David. (The fella used to write comics for Marvel, mainly X-Factor.)

Good stuff. Nothing better than a fellow Federation starship asking the Enterprise for a status/withdraw when Riker responds, "Tell them we're washing our hair!!"

Plus, a Ferengi Borg? Guinan's sister? The return of the Doomsday Machine?

Classic, should have been a movie.

That was a freakin' awesome book.
I loved Peter David's work for a long time, his run on HULK is the gold standard.
. . . I gave up on comics back in college, in large part cuz he and Erik Larson got in such a pissing match over Savage Dragon vs. HULK//Marvel vs. Image comics that it actually soured my whole opinion on the industry.

Despite how talented they both are, I can't actually bring myself to pick up their work now.
I know its stupid, but it really turned me off.

The new Star Trek movie was awesome!! Matt and I just got back. I was a major doubter. I didn't even really want to go. I haven't seen a Star Trek ep since I was about 5 yrs old probably, if that, so I was not really interested. I have never seen any of the movies either. I loved the movie! I thought it was very exciting and fun, good acting, decent story. It was a very enjoyable movie to watch, and it didn't seem as long as it was. Matt is a big Trek fan, and he also enjoyed it, which I guess shows that fans and non-fans alike can get it. I would recommend it as a theater-see.

*ding dong* ... nope.

"Without You" is a great song written by the british band Badfinger and covered awesomely by Harry Nilsson. Then some chick murdered it in recent years (Mariah?). Ugg.

I thought the new movie was okay, but I wouldn't have felt I was missing anything if I didn't see it.

Thinking about it afterward, I feel the reason for my reaction comes straight from the Nostalgia Factor--which has been the ST Franchise problem for a long time, it alienates a big part of the potential audience because some folks just don't want to see the "old faces" they've seen for 40 years.

This movie should be able to get over that problem fairly easily.

It was pretty well put together, but I felt the subplot w/ "old spock" was pretty useless, and awkwardly wedged into the movie disrupting its pace in the process.
I also felt the fight scenes were nearly incomprehensible.

Anyway, I know the reason I've liked trek for so long is that I "grew up with" the CAST, not just the characters.
So I had no empathy for these new faces.
The freshness they bring will go a long way into bringing new audience in, but it also turns the franchise into just another summer blockbuster.
I used to see Trek movies for the "family reunion" aspect, now I'll just be going for the big explosions.

Not saying any of that is bad persay, but its really going to change my "relationship" with the product.
And lets face it, I don't need that kind of relationship with any fictional people, I should be out making real friends.
