Of course theirs good music out there. But what rock music nowadays appeals to these scenarios
1 - It can make a 10 year old jump around like mad
2 - It critiques our culture/society as it tries to reshape it for better and worse
3- Its ingrained with a healthy streak of piss off/rock the boat attitude that makes the the sedate members of the world cringe

1. MXPX made me jump around when i was 10.
2. Most 10 year olds dont understand the political themes of rock music, and blindly follow the lyrics because the music makes their ignorant 10 year old asses "jump around"
3. Why does ALL rock have to make the world cringe? Sure, bands like Black Sabbath and KISS did that, but what about bands like Led Zeppelin and Queen? Or even Genesis or the Police?

If every band sang about the political and the macabre i would say that rock is infact dead... or at least very boring.

I find it refreshing that we have bands that disregard vocals.
I am intrigued by the odd vocals that some bands use.
I laugh at bands that mock other genres and still rock.
I am pleased that there are still people who can write a good rock song with out a giant guitar solo in the middle.

Jesus Christ, man, why does rock have to BE anything?
It's all music, we all listen to it. Don't make rock music out to be more than it really is.

also, you make it seem like something that is 10 years old or more is irrelevant. why can't you listen to something that isn't new?

whos the hipster/emo/razzledazzle/pop'n'fresh/cuntrag now?

yeah, i like the strokes and i don't give a goddamn what anyone else thinks about them. i don't really care if it's cool to like a band, or cool to not like a band because they're the "it" thing at the moment. i like what i like, so you can eat it.

also, since when does a 10 year old measure how good a rock 'n' roll band is? ten year olds fucking suck.

also, you bitch about how bands today are just ripping off what's already been done, but guess what? everyone in the fucking history of rock has done that.

anyway, enough of this. back to my sammy adams cream stout.

[wood says]Christ, I go home sick and I miss out on one of the most entertaining posts of the year. that's what i get for having THE KILLER FLU (not SARS or JIMMIES). Burke's post hit the nail on the head with a hammer. It's impossible to consider relevance without a context, making it subjective. If some person dreams of singing and dancing their way to stardom, then I imagine Brittany and Madddonnna would be more relevant to them than, say, Ween or The Champs, or even The Strokes. I don't like what I find on the radio; it's not relevant to me. But hanging out at the argo I can hear that it is to 90% of the bands in there. Whoa, I almost went into a rant, but I'm too tired. Gotta sneeze.[/wood says]

fuck it! I started listening to hip-hop.

I gave up trying to make a decision about rock music.well, at least I gave up on being ridiculed for what music I like/don't like.

you can get out of any of these types of conversations by saying that you listen to hip hop.

and bloody..... don't even get started with minardi..... you will not win......

if you dont like rock music today why dont you go pick up a guitar and change it you big dummy? whining on a message board is just pathetic... also, lots of rock used to be about politics but the majority wasnt about anything but partying and getting laid, GnR, crue, pretty much all that trashy shit

I know i'm not well spoken, or intelligent enough to argue with this bloody hands fella (i'm assuming he's a guy, cuz he's being a dick) But the same things that made me rock when i was ten don't nearly make me rock as hard anymore. Could this be that i've gotten older and i've become jaded? Could it be that i've been listening to that music SINCE i was ten and it's gotten a little tepid? I'm going to agree with monument and suggest that you do something to change this. Let me know when you're playing, too, cuz i wanna see the future of music. You know so i can call the major labels and tell them what to put their millions behind, next.

3 relevant bands -

1) dismemberment plan. although they are now defunct, they are a perfect example of quote-unquote rock being alive and well. endlessly creative and progressive with both song structure and subject material, they are a band that can appeal to casual music fans, music elitists, and everyone in between.

2) fugazi - name one fugazi album that isn't fucking brillant and original, with "attitude" to boot. i fucking dare you.

3) sonic youth - while they might be less consistant than fugazi or the dismemberment plan, they are always trying new and different stuff. what 70's band does murray street sound like?

you only asked for three. when/if you deny these i can give you more. music is alive and well.

p.s. - james taylor is awesome. who else can make a hit record in a mental institution?
