Detasseling. I was 12.

motherfucking corn

what that wiki article fails to explain is that the manual labor part is very physical.

the corn leaves have sharp edges and if you dont wear protective clothing from head to toe you will get cut up by the leaves. You have to wear a hat, eye protection, bandanna around face and neck, long sleeve shirt, full pants, gloves, and boots (for mud and snakes).

you get up really early and in the early dawn the dew on the leaves will soak your clothing fully. then the sun rises, burns off the dew and everything gets humid, and your clothing, which is soaking wet, gets heavy and warm. Then you get to eat lunch! then you work again until the afternoon. you walk for miles and miles doing the same motion over and over and over in corn that is as tall as your chest. you get sweaty, muddy, and exhausted.

the fun parts though are that you are in a crew of 7 other people and a crew boss (who is usually an experienced detassler who over sees the crew, pushes them faster or slower, and cleans up what the crew misses)

and you just fuck around in the field while working, being stupid teenagers.

i like that it was my first job. it was really hard, a lot of kids never finish a summer working the job. i worked as a detassler for like 3 summers in a row. after my first year i was promoted to a crew boss. i was 13 and i was a boss

memories

wow! that is so interesting! Anyone that can hang doing that kind of hard work is amazing to me. Truly.

My first job, other than the gawdawful babysitting all my life, was cleaning limos when I was 14. It was under the table but it paid well. $20 an hour. I had to wash and detail all of the limos plus stock the inside. Like wash the crystal glasses and decanters and make sure it was fully stocked w/ liquor and snacks too before it went out. (each one had mini fridges in them) It was a fun job.

that corn job is gnarly, but kinda seems midwestern-y fun. But also Midwestern-y suck. My first job was subway, not very interesting. over my 14 years of being in the work force I have 10 years of sandwichery under my belt.

Actually when i was 12 my family cleaned government trailers at construction sites. So that was my first job.

lots of people do cocaine. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on the planet that has never done it. And I had to steam clean the velvet upholstery (in some of them, most were leather) because of stains a lot.

I got to keep the tips they left in the mini bar and people are just really messing when they are drinking. Oh and the drivers - most of the dudes working this outfit were hotties. They hooked up a lot w/ the clientele.

When I was 6-7 yoa I would do the filing for the bailbonds place my mom worked for (she worked the office and for extra money took bouty jobs) and would get compensated w/ A&W and shirley temples w/ lots of cherries. hahahaha Now that was fun. I spent a lot of time in the Clark County jailhouse waiting on my mom. There was this long hallway that I would make my baby skates doll skate up and down it. This doll -->

Emperors of Japan
Myspace

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

When I was 10 yrs old, I used to sell carnival novelty shit at the fairs and parades on the Navajo Nation. My fam would always be busy at the pow wow as my mom and sister dance and my dad would be doing other things like arena directing. And I'd just chill walking around the carnival and going to the rodeo. I met this vendor guy, Eagle Beak (a white dude with a big nose), who sold all sorts of carnival stuff. He had chinese yo-yos, regular yo-yos that would light up, those wierd light up fiber optic thingies, along with the usual assortment of snap caps, knock off harley davidson t-shirts and finger-cuffs.

I remember the first time I came around the corner to sell at the pow wow arena. I was all decked out with a multi-colored light up visor and a tray of all kids of junk. My mom was looking at me like "WTF?". But all the kids would flock to me 'cause they wanted the shit I had. Eventually, all the parents dreaded seeing me.

Anyway, I'd make about $50 bucks a day and the guy would buy me corn dogs and pop. It was a pretty sweet gig and every year when the fair would happen, I'd have a job. Also, it gave me experience which led me to working in hamburger stands when I was 12. Boo yah!

First tax-paying job was at the Daylight Donuts in Flagstaff circa 1996... First in a long line of jobs that required getting up at 4am or earlier, just brutal for a high school kid. The shop was pretty much a front for selling meth, though I was naive enough that I barely understood what was up... BUT those bakers made awesome donuts, really some serious OCD pride in the product. Best I've ever eaten, no kidding. Put on a lot of weight that summer for a generally athletic kid :-)

Best story: the place got robbed (I wasn't working), but during the robbery a cop car pulled into the parking lot (getting donuts, duh!) and the crooks got nabbed before they left the scene... 1) there ain't much cash in a donut shop, and 2) the cops are always gonna be right there.

Other highlights: I got to drive the boss's hot rodded El Camino (complete with overflowing ashtray and confederate flag license plate) to deliver donuts to the local hotels for their breakfast... Also got to supply friends with free donuts around 5am when they'd stumble up the street from a hard night's partying.
