So Sonic Youth is hypocritical because they played in China 3 years ago? Dang. They are completely separate issues. I would hope that any band that has a chance to reach out to the people of China would take that opportunity. There is a huge difference between the issues of China and the US. Allowing some Chinese youth to see a show by a non-mainstream American band is kind of huge. Depriving some whiny Americans from seeing some bands is not really on the same level IMO.

Tony, you seem to be a naysayer against any sort of protest short of beating politicians over the head with a sign until they change their mind

s

top touring in China (i don't think i need to explain this one)
-Bands on the boycott list that have toured in china: Sonic Youth, Ozomatli, Tenacious D, Kanye West, Joe Satriani...

A-fucking-men. Even when enacted SB1070 is not going to cause a fraction of the human rights abuses of China.

When i get pulled over and harassed because my skin is brown, i'll remember this. Thank you for reminding me that I don't have it as bad as the Chinese. Racial profiling is not so bad after all!

Calm the fuck down. There is no way that's what I meant and any rational person would know that. Especially when I said that I understand where certain bands understandably would want to avoid our state.

Boycotts rule. The groups that have pulled their conventions? Awesome. That has real impact. People boycotting the groups and businesses that bankroll the politicians who wrote this law..fuck yeah. Sonic Youth, NIN, Michael Moore not coming here? Who the fuck cares.

Donald is right that there is a bigger issue here but this thread is about bands boycotting the state specifically so people brought up a lack of consistency in the stance. Lets take China out of the equation. I assume these bands, being so concerned with social justice and civil rights violations, are also refusing to play in California because of Prop 8 in solidarity with the gay community right?

fuck you guys. it's all about china. B)

sorry for being so uppity about it, i'm just tired of what i perceive as insincere outrage and posturing on both sides of the issue. not here on the shizz necessarily (and i mean that honestly - i know a lot of people here are genuinely angry and have done a lot about it), but in general. so in short, i'd like to say "fuck you" to the following people:

to businesses boycotting our state
because it's taking real dollars out of my pocket. i'm not talking about the overall economic impact in taxes, i'm talking about businesses and governments that would otherwise work with my company that won't do so because of the bill. i will lose money because of this.

to musicians and artists boycotting our state
you want to make a real difference? come play here and get people riled up. more people are going to listen to you than they will to me. but whatever. i think you're playing into the hands of the politicians who wrote the bill, because they definitely don't want you here. my gut reaction when i read about sound strike and when i watched de la rocha's video explaining it was that they just don't get it.

to russell pearce and jan brewer
this wasn't my fight, and i was happy to not have to add this to the long list of things i have to incorporate into my day. but now you made it something i have to deal with. thanks for making us all look like assholes.

in conclusion, i hate everything about this bill. i hate that i disagree with how people want to protest. i hate that i should have to join a fucking protest march just so people are treated fairly. i hate that i'm wasting my valuable, valuable brain power even thinking about it.

thanks for calling me out on it, raub. you're right. i figure if you're going to spend any energy on a protest you should make it count, but i guess you can take that to the extreme and avoid doing the small things because they don't seem like they're going to work.

Emperors of Japan
Myspace

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

Exactly.

I am sorta torn about this Boycott issue, but kinda not really. The fact that there is any kind of boycott is good for the cause sb1070 being repealed.

Sure it hurts us a little. Ok, maybe a lot, but the point is to starve this out of those in power. Make it so that their constituents are beating down the door
because we can't get fuel, or produce, or (insert thing to boycott) is not available. They'll cave.

We just have to be stronger than the politicians, and people who support the bill.

We are arguing over the fact that the only boycott happening now is regarding musicians. They have followers, followers who listen.

This is not about China or double standards right now. It's about US.

All we need to do is have Steve Jobs boycott AZ and this thing will be on~!

Can you imagine the upheaval if Country Thunder decided to join Sound Strike?

None of those Country music artists would ever sell a record again. heheh

Best line in the thread so far :)

The more people show their discontent the better. There is less energy to expend than most people realize. It takes no less energy then going to a show, and generally there is free water, and it's always family friendly for those parents out there who have kids. Even if it is only walking in a march or standing on a big huge stencil that says "S.O.S. Congress" these little acts get press, and people read the press.

I guess what I am saying is, even small acts count :)

oh, one more thing: chalupacabra, comparing californias prop 8 and racial profiling helped me calm the fuck down. Are gays being asked to show their papers too? I had no idea.

Its good to know you only care about civil rights violations when they impact you. I mean, that's your perogative...fair enough.

come on dude, It's upsetting to me that you (not you specifically) can't get married if you're gay. I care about that. I think it's ridiculous. If you want to get married, you should be able to get married, regardless of what sex you're into. The issue here is racial profiling. If this bill was about mexicans not being allowed to get married, then I would be able to understand your train of thought. Bringing up other issues and getting upset because a band didn't take a stand on something else is silly.

:o :o :o

So no more Elena Kagans, no more Donna Shalalas, no more Martina Navratilovas, no more k.d. langs, no more Constance McMillens—because all women must grow up to suck dick, crank out babies, and do women's work. And the existence of adult women who are not interested in "becoming someone's wife" and "making babies" constitutes a medical emergency that requires us to treat women who are currently pregnant with a dangerous experimental hormone. Otherwise their daughters might grow up to, um, be nominated to sit on the Supreme Court, serve as cabinet secretaries, take 18 Grand Slam singles titles, win Grammies, and take their girlfriends to prom.
